A novice looking for advice on importing some wine

I am admittedly a bit of a novice in this particular field, but I am looking to purchase roughly a case of wine at auction from a reputable auction house in Europe. The wine’s producer has no US importer, plus all of their production is taken up by allocations to the vineyard’s European customer base, so this might be the only route for me ever acquiring any of this producer’s wine.

I reached out to the auction house about shipment to the US. They said absolutely they can package and ship the bottles to me. However, they use FedEx or DHL for their shipping services, and I know that both of those companies require the US receiver to be a licensed TTB importer.

If I had time, I would simply apply for a TTB import permit, but lead times for approval seemingly are 75 days at the moment, so that wont help me this time around, but I think I will probably get that ball rolling for the future.

Does anyone have recommendations for an existing importer who might be able to provide the service as a go-between for this shipment? Or does anyone have advice on another method for receiving such a shipment from Europe?

Many Thanks!

I’ve had both FedEx and DHL international shipments arrive to me just fine. Depends on the paperwork they fill out on their side.

Thanks for the input, it sounds like maybe just pull the trigger and cross my fingers. Seems to be worth the risk to me.

what’s the wine?

Thanks for that information, yeah the more I’ve looked at it I think it’s not the route to take. Definitely seems to create more problems.
