Several of us joined Jon and Kelly for a nice dinner….no specific wine theme…we all brought some wines mostly served blind. Jon served up a nice ‘surf and turf’. Of course there were a couple of trips to the cellar as the night progressed. Here are the wines served.
Laurent-Perrier Cuvee Rose - always a lovely wine and this did not disappoint. Strawberry aromas, creamy citrus on the palate…good depth and length. Nice.
2013 Ch Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose -Served blind and don’t think any of us had the wine before. Light salmon color. Strawberry and floral notes. Light bodied…Nice acidity. Lacks a bit in the middle and falls off on the finish. Very enjoyable. Better than I thought it would be.
1996 Jadot Chassagne Montrachet Les Caillerets - No pox! Stone fruits. Fleshy, viscous, a bit flabby, nice depth. Certainly could use more acidity, but nonetheless, very enjoyable.
1997 Marc Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers - Dark golden color. Very advanced, sherry like aromas. Fair acidity. Too bad it flawed.
2010 Arterberry Maresh Chardonnay - Hint of cork taint, that got worse with air. The fruit was somewhat muted. I had the wine a week prior and was impressed…Not this time.
2010 Ceritas Heintz Vyd - Light straw color. Orchard fruit, citrus and minerality. Certainly NOT the big fat oaky Cali chardonnay. I like this. Guessed that it might be California. Very nice balance of fruit and acid. Great length. I’d buy this one.
2005 Roulot Meursault Les Les Luchets - A trip to the cellar to pick a couple of wines, and came up with this Roulot duo. Medium straw color. Possibly slightly advanced, but not poxed. More advanced than a bottle that I had last year. Honey, citrus and stone fruit notes, Rich and very approachable and delicious for drinking now. Quite a contrast to the Perrieres.
2004 Roulot Meursault Perrieres - Medium straw. Quite closed up initially and I got some herbal notes that blew off. But oh, when it started to open, this was great. Intense minerality and salinity…that gains depth and intensity on the palate as it sits in the glass. Beautiful texture, quite racy and very complex. Long finish. Hold for the long haul or decant for a couple of hours.
1961 Dom Georges Mugneret Echezeaux - Very light color. Very tertiary and ‘autumnal’, earth and soy on the nose. Light on the palate. Perhaps a bit of oxidation. This wine has seen it’s better days, but still enjoyable.
1974 Sterling Cabernet - Red fruits, tobacco…‘old’ california cab nose. Starting to lose it’s fruit, therefore a bit out of balance. A real treat and a Favre birth year wine !
1988 Penfold’s Grange - I’ve had this in the cellar since release and never had the wine. It’s pretty much what I expected with all the american vanilla oak on the nose, but the palate was delicious. Spice, cherry fruit. Very nice depth and length. Very well balanced and quite ‘young’ considering it’s age. I’ll keep my next bottle in the cellar for many more years.
2010 Halcon Vineyards Syrah Alturas - Dark fruits, licorice, herbs, spice. Pretty easy to drink given it’s age. Quite nice.
1989 Huet Vouvray Moelleux Le Haut-Lieu This was beautiful and one of my favorites of the evening. Dark golden orange color. Honey, apricot, concentrated. Great fruit and rich mid palate depth. Some viscosity. Super long. Wish I had this in my cellar.
1997 DRC Richebourg - Another trip to the cellar…We thought a DRC that might be ready. Popped and poured. Very well structured and would have benefited with a decant. Some browning on the edge. Dark fruits, ripe. Lots of dry extract. Sweetness on the finish. Lovely wine and should improve with more time in the cellar, but quite enjoyable now.
A fun evening enjoyed by all. Glad I had a car driving me home however.
