A day in Walla Walla

Will be passing through in ealry June. I was last there 12 years ago for a Cayuse release party. Had a great dinner at The Marc.
No longer on the Cayuse list and many wineries I visited don;t seem to be around. Rulo? There’s always the
K Vitner’s tasting room, but who else is worth visiting? And is The Marc still the best restaurant in town?

I’d suggest Devison and prefer Hattaways to the Marc.

Rulo is gone. They retired and sent out their final purchase mailer earlier this month. They haven’t made any wine for a handful of years.

Sad to hear that. It was agood visit and I bought their wine for a while.

I’ll second Devison and add FoolHardy in the old Elephant Seven space. We also enjoyed Moonbase but it may have been because of the personality pouring the wines. As for food, I hesitate recommending one as we’ve found WW restaurants to be characterized by inconsistency; you never know what you’re going to get.

Please shoot me a message and I’ll set up a great tasting at my place (Sleight of Hand Cellars). If I am in town, happy to show you around the valley as well with some vineyard tours. It’s an amazing town, you are going to have a great time!

I’ll be bringing a group of friends to Walla Walla for a week in March. I’m setting up tastings for each day but was wondering if there is anything else to do around town, parks, museums, gardens…?

Wine Valley Golf Course is nearby and (IMO) a fun course. The Thief downtown usually has fun champagne tasting flights. Don’t think either of those are what you were asking for, but best I got.

The Whitman Mission Whitman Mission National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service) is a nice park. I’ve not visited, but it gets good reviews and the history is interesting.

Favorites eats for us are AK’s Mercado (Andre’s Kitchen), in location of former Olive something on the main drag, Saffron, Bacon and Eggs.

Winery visits for us have narrowed to Rotie (club events and tasting at the vineyard in M-F now), Force Majeure/Weathereye, Mark Ryan or Rasa sometimes, and last time visited Grosgrain and Prospice to pick up BD16 wines. We visit about once a year on average I guess and the list of wineries changes constantly. We usually hit Rotie and one or two others, sometimes randomly, sometimes with purpose. We live about 2 hours away so it’s often a one night weekend trip. We have camped in Rotie’s parking lot last couple of times in our new in ‘24 Winnebago MiniFlex.

Roger, Whitman College has a cool gallery, and sculptures all throughout the grounds, gorgeous and very easily to walk the entire campus to see it all. There is a terrific theater called The Powerhouse Theater worth checking to see if they have anything while you are in town. Pioneer Park has an aviary, one of the oldest parks in WA State. And the DT district if full of historical buildings, etc. Artist Squire Broel is from WW and has a studio that you can make an appt. to see. There is a great hike around Bennington Lake as well as Harris Park if you enjoy getting out in nature. And lots of golf nearby too!

Places I enjoyed included Sleight of Hand (I saw Trey, one of the owners, has responded in this thread), Dusted Valley and Rasa Vineyards.
Other wineries whose wine I have enjoyed, but have not visited the winery cellar door, including Reynvaan, Grosgrain and Doubleback/Bledsoe Family.

Appreciate you Todd! Come back soon!

We had a great time in Walla Walla!

We flew into PDX as our son and his family live there and it’s a direct flight from Charlotte. Loaded up our rental SUV with the three other couples and made the highly scenic drive up the Columbia Valley with a couple stops for sightseeing and lunch at Burnt Field Brewing in Boardman.

We rented the Boyer House, which is just under a mile from downtown and right next to Whitman College. Well stocked, very comfortable and plenty of room for four couples.

We mainly cooked in but had two fantastic dinners in town at Passatempo and Brasserie 4.

The 100% consensus highlight was Sleight of Hand. Sorry we missed Trey as he was on our side of the country doing his thing at the Charleston Wine and Food Festival. Trey’s partner Keith, as well as Baily and Madi did a tremendous job. The wines were great and the vibe in the tasting was a lot of fun.

The most polarizing part of the trip were the reds from the Rocks District. The funk is real and not to everyone’s liking but I do enjoy a bit of Old World funk in moderation.

Here’s the tasting itinerary for our week, mostly three but twice we did two a day:
Woodward Canyon Winery
L’Ecole No. 41
Syzygy
Adamant Cellars
Devium Wine
Rasa Vineyards
Spring Valley Vineyard
Pepper Bridge Winery
Revelry Vintners
Grosgrain
The Walls
Valdemar Estates
Rotie Cellars
Abeja
Gramercy Cellars
Time and Direction
Va Piano Vineyards
Saviah Cellars
Sleight of Hand Cellars
