'91 Woodward Canyon Cab - excellent!

Deep magenta color, good balance, resolved tannins, and a distinct and attractive blackberry flavor element that I have not encountered in Bordeaux or Cal Cabs. I’m not really familiar with Washington State Cabs, so I don’t know if this is found elsewhere in that State…

I live on the East Coast but there are several stores here (in the D. C. area) who sell Woodward Canyon which I was also fortunate to visit-in the mid '90’s. Then, I would guess there were a half dozen or so wineries in Walla Walla and now perhaps 130 or more. Woodward Canyon has a rich tradition in WA state. I think some of the best cab bargains in America are there (i.e. 2010 Bergevin Lane Moonspell which is mid '20’s with a case discount) along with outstanding syrah.

In 1994 the WS had a cover story which labelled Leonetti “America’s Best Merlot.” I would make the argument that WA state wine took off after that appeared. In '91 I would guess that Quilceda Creek and Woodward Canyon were the standard bearers for WA state cab.

Woodward doesn’t always get the top scores on release these days, but I’ve found that their wines age extremely well.

I’ve never been a fan of younger ones due to too much oak, but they generally age VERY well and the oak moves to the background. I opened a 1987 WC Dedication Series the other day, and it was lovely, opening up with extended air time,
