5 Monty's from 2004 and 1 premier cru ( and guess what )

My wine club Euryanthe got together for our 50th gathering , so we did something real special . A blind tasting of 6 white wines . I did not tell my friends there was a ringer …
Wine 1 : deep yellow , nutty , lot’s of material and body but a lack of freshness and minerality . It’s the style of the white wines from Le Moine . Nice but not my cup of tea .94/100 ( Lucien Le Moine 2004 Montrachet )
Wine 2 : fresh and extremely elegant , spicy , not a blockbuster but pure finesse wine , very aromatic and complex , flowers and hay . 97/100 ( Henri Boillot Montrachet 2004 )
Wine 3 : flinty , gun powder , dry extract , lot’s of power , not so complex but very very delicious . 97/100 ( Domaine d’Auvenay , Puligny Montrachet les Folatieres 2004 ) .
Wine 4 : premoxed ! ( of course , there had to be one… ) Bouchard , Montrachet 2004
Wine 5 : still tight and not giving much , finesse wine , very elegant but a bit closed . I like the class of this wine but I will have to hope it opens one day 95+?/100 ( 2004 Montrachet Girardin )
Wine 6 : powerful , flowers and spices , some oak , a pleasure wine and my favorite of the 6 wines . This is so good 98/100 ( DRC Montrachet 2004 )

We were 10 tasters and 8 of them preferred wine 3 as their nr 1 . The white wines of d’auvenay are imo the best dry white wines in the world . Unfortunately , there are today priced rediculously , so I stopped buying them . But I still have some bottles left from the days it was still possible to buy them for less than 150 Euro’s

Magic in a bottle .

Herwig- Beautiful tasting. Did you decant the LeMoine and agitate ( shake ) it a lot as he suggests for all his whites ? So great the Boillot was still drinking well.I have always loved Bize’s wines and her whites are no exception. DRC, what can you say. 04 is a monumental vintage for the Montrachet. One of the truly great expressions of chardonnay , to have such opulence while still maintaining freshness and balance - oh what a wine. It would be fascinating to do the same tasting with the 10’s. Cheers,Eddie

Hi Eddie , yes , I double decanted the le Moine at noon . It’s a style : very long elevages , bottling the wine after 2 to 3 years . His wines have a lot of stuffing ( I guess because of the prolonged contact with the lees )but because of the late bottling , they loose freshness .
