2025 Burgundy

We just returned from 2 days tasting with Bill Nanson (highly recommend) and while 6 domaines is a small sample size, would say the reds were more inconsistent than I expected (maybe on average a 7.5 on a 10 scale vs the 8.5 I was expecting) and the whites maybe 7.5 or 8 vs the 6.5 I was expecting. To be clear, we tasted some really wonderful 2025 reds, mostly from barrel, but I was expecting more consistent quality across the board.

We tasted 6-12 or so 2025’s each at Joseph Voillot. Thierry Glantenay, Chandon de Briailles, henri gouges, du Couvent and Briotet. Outside of the inconsistency noted, the good news is there were standout wines at every domaine with Joseph Voillot maybe getting the overall edge for consistent high level.

I posted more food related comments on the travel section.

Interesting. Could you add some detailed notes. Also I think you mean Glantenay, one of my favorite producers

What are the best Glantenay wines, Mark?

Thanks for catching the typo, doing this on flight back to kill time so was careless!

While I do not have formal tasting notes, I will post a few favorites later today or tomorrow as I did keep track of that. If I try now there will be more typos for sure!

His Volnays are excellent, particularly his Santenots and Clos de Chenes. He also makes a good Pommard Rugiens and the very rare Sausilles, but generally I prefer his Volnays. His 2010 Santenots is killer if you like your Volnays with minerality.

Do you mean Bernard and Thierry or Georges and Pierre?

Judging from Mark’s comments, my guess is : B and T Glantenay,…and not G and P.

In Quebec, there is a 15 to 20% higher by G & P to B & T.

My go-to Volnay producer is B & T Glantenay, after multiple and over a period of few years by pairing tasting of G. & P vs B. & T.

Hope my message is not confusing.

You are lucky. I love B Nanson’s book…

I leave tonight for my 20th annual two week Burgorama trip. Always quite the inspiring marathon. I’ll share some thoughts on the flight home.

Interesting. I can’t say I’ve really heard of most of those Domaines. So I’ll be very interested to hear others’ thoughts on 2025 reds from producers I purchase. I only tasted limited 2025 whites and was very impressed.

My expectations exactly! So my small sample size somewhat uninformed conclusion was that both were very good overall, but I was walking in (perhaps naively) expecting a vintage of the decade type experience on the reds.

Thierry ( the son ) and Bernard ( the father ) GLANTENAY crafted 3 Volnay 1er cru and also Vonlay v.v.village. SAQ carries all 4 of them.
The released price for CdChenes and Santenots are similar with CdChenes about 2% higher. His Les Brouillard is 10% cheapter than CdChenes. The Volnay v.v. is 50% of CdChenes.

It is very hard to say : which of the 4 above is the best.
It depends on when one would like to drink them at which stage of each of life of the 4 wines - bearing in mind : Paul’s best may not be Peter’s best.

Hope the above will help your enjoyment of red Burgundy wines.

Who said '25 was supposed to be an epic red vintage?

A friend recently characterized 2025 reds as less fruity than 2023/24, with more complexity, to be drunk younger.
