Hyde vineyard reporting budbreak in pinot.
Over 86 inches and counting⦠Rain⦠Some sun later this week, they say.
Weāve got budbreak in pinot in the Laguna Ridge area in RRV.
Bump
More rain on tap for California, mostly North:
Rain is winding down, the remainder of the season doesnāt typically have much rain. Itās been warm so things are moving. If I were a grower, Iād get ready to worry about frost, wind, etc, after things are a little farther along.

Every person on planet Earth has a phone that takes pictures. So nobody has two minutes to take a snap of budbreak? Geeze!
Driving around Sonoma area, up 12 to SR and Healdsburg last week, there was a mix. Mostly nothing, a few short leaves out. Cool conditions this coming week will slow progress.
Sharing an article in the Seattle Times about the effects of the freeze in January for Walla Walla Vineyards
Looks like a couple more inches for CA this weekend
No pictures, but Iāve seen budbreak in Napa and Anderson Valley for those who pruned early this week. They may regret early pruning as itāll get cold this weekend and possibly next week before warming up again.
Canāt comment on Anderson Valley but Napa should be fine with the cooler temps forecast (lowest predicted is 43 thru 4/6, so even if some areas are cooler, we should not see much in the way of frost. ) Next weekās highs are in the low-70ās which will move things along. Not much wind either over the next week or so (10-12mph on the 4th but thatās it). Rain this Friday with showers on Saturday and Sunday so lots of indoor tastings for the holiday weekend.
Rain in So Cal finally stop?
One more minor event this Friday and then the big melt will start. Hoping itāll be possible to hike the tallest peaks in a few weeks.
Latest forecast - there will be fans on tonight for sure. Temps approaching 80 next week. The rollercoaster of spring!
Hereās a pic of 6 foot tall cover crop at the Gruner field I planted in Anderson Valley a few years back. My buddy says itās still too wet to get a tractor down a row.
Those low temperatures are incredible ! Last year we had one night in early February that hit -7F and that left us with vines having a mix of primary, secondary, and tertiary buds. That event alone we predicted cut us down to a potential harvest of 20-40% depending on variety. I say potential because a late frost cut in May us down further to a harvest level at 10-20%. Mother Nature can be cruel.
Another storm. This is pretty late to be having this much water. Iām thinking strawberry growers and other field crops having issues with this. Not a huge deal for grapesā¦but not good either
What challenges does it cause for grape growers? Thanks
