2024 German Wine Auctions - Commentary and Results thread - Bernkasteler, Mosel and Nahe

Watching this a bit, today’s auction is so different from other live auctions I’ve seen. Leisurely, slow pace. Almost kind of dull. I don’t speak much German, but enough to get the gist. Pretty happy about Loersch Kabinett for €20!

The wines showed very well this morning I think. Particularly the 13 (!) Kabinetten.

Most growers are expecting reductions in prices.

Here is the link to the Mosel auction scheduled to start in about 6 minutes,

Replacing original link with one that does not include local commentary overlaid.

And here we go! Good luck everyone!

Mixed results on the GG lots. Lauer down quite a bit from last year, but Milz posted some nice gains ending with 2,000 Euro for his 3L (1,250 last year.)

We are about halfway through and the Charity Box is up to a respectable 6,000 Euro bid.

So far prices are generally down for bottles, often way down, with magnums barely managing a volume premium- and sometimes the opposite.

What is interesting is that the 6L bottles are going through the roof- new records so far on all fronts. The 1% is alive and well.

As someone who thinks US consumer demand has largely been responsible for the price movement over the past few years, I would not be surprised if this is largely driven by decreased US consumer demand, reflected in people still putting in a few bids for 750s but avoiding the expected premium for magnums.

Missed the earlier lots :man_facepalming: - can anyone tell me where I might be able to find hammer price on the closed lots? Specifically looking for hammer price on lots 10, 18, and 21. Thanks in advance!

It’s in English?!?

That’s a surprise. Can anyone post the results from today’s auction so far up to this point?

My favourite Kabi of the auction.

One way or another, by the end of the day tomorrow there will be lists posted in this thread with hammer prices. I am backup to do that, but working today and so would need to do tomorrow. Our usual person is at the auctions and so also may need until the weekend to post.

Huge drops in the first Prum lots, basically a tad under the 2020 auction (for 2019 vintage) for the 750ml spatlese based on nominal dollars and a pretty significant discount if you were to use constant dollars

Does anyone have any idea why the auctions are so soft this year?

Where to start?

The prices of a couple of years ago were a bubble and unsustainable. Entire wine market is soft. Not an epic vintage. Tariff concerns. List goes on.

Ugh, I should’ve bid on that Schloss Leiser Kabi at 45e

10 - @ 40Euro
18 - @ 45Euro
21 - @ 65Euro

I’ll bid 1100 on that!

My 151e bid on the Schloss Leiser LGKA (375ml) fell short. It sold for 175e

The lack of vintage of hype is surely one part. I happen to like the vintage a lot.

I am sure @ThatcherBakerBriggs can make that happen
