2024 German Wine Auctions - Commentary and Results thread - Bernkasteler, Mosel and Nahe

How can you cherry pick the wines when each lot is often no more than a few hundred bottles, if that?

I’m not sure the relevance. I’m talking about only bidding on the top wines in the best vintages. So nothing from 2023 or 2024 fits that bill.

Does anyone know what time the Bernkasteler auction starts?

Last week auction start was changed to 1pm local time

Good evening everyone,

For tomorrow morning- I am not having luck locating a specifically advertised youtube channel for the Bernkasteler Ring auction (starting at 7AM EST), but here is the link to where it was live-streamed the past two years,

If it is not there in the morning, I will scramble to find it and post here- but next most likely candidate is the following link where the Mosel and Nahe auctions are live streamed each year,

And if anyone has information to the contrary- please post here!

The time zone change is different there, hence some past confusion- but this year I checked carefully and think I have it right. See you all bright and early in the morning!

Pretty sedate day so far on the bidding. Curious to hear from attendees how the wines are plus the mood in the room.

As a buyer of all the 2022 Pinots, I was quite happy with the pricing, but surprised it was pretty much in line with last year, a bit higher here or lower there, given the strength of the vintage (though 2021 was certainly a good year.)

In any event, from a numbers and trend perspective this feels far more like ā€œnormalā€ (meaning 2016 vintage and prior.)

Wow, won 2 bottles of LoerschTrittenheimer Apotheke Spatlese @ 25e! Wayyy under my 39e bid, so this must’ve closed wayyy lower than previous years.

2013 Philipps-Eckstein Graacher Domprobs Auslese*** @ 31e

1997 Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese* @ 35.50e. What a steal! I always love getting these wonderfully stored library wines for such great prices. I’m also a fan of this vintage in general.

2022 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Uralte Reben BA @ 59e. This is the first wine I bid on that I didn’t win this year.

2012 Rebenhof Ürziger Würzgarten BA @ 100e

2021 Carl Loewen Leiwener Klostergarten Eiswein @ 85e. ugh, I only bid for 2 at 150… wish I got more

I only put in for 3 of these and was wishing I bid for more. So it goes.

Does anyone have a link to auction results?

First time poster here… bought out of lurking mode by this auction.

Snap, I also got 3 of the 1997 Kerpen W-S Auslese.

And also 3 of the Kees-Kieren Auslese. All for much less than I was expecting.

I wish I had realised the Loersch were going to go so low as well and gone for some of them. I had a 2022 Loersch Auction Kabinett a few weeks ago and its got a lot going on. Needs time to fully settle and mature, but sooo much flavour and energy.

Yes, on the plus side, I generally got bottles for a lot less than anticipated, but on the questionable side, I won close to my max amount of bottles that I bid on, which is something I don’t typically expect to happen…

Regarding the Kerpen, I picked up 4 because I have been disappointed with only getting 2 the last few years. They have been really reliable, great aged Rieslings for me.

It’s interesting to see the positive commentary on Kerpen. Back when Terry Theise was importing and actively supporting the wines they were a hard sell. I always liked them (still have several bottles), but almost nobody else back then shared my enthusiasm for the wines.

I am a longtime fan as well- love the wines.

My theory as to their lack of popularity in the US- or at least here in Texas- is that they are a bit too ethereal for most people. In that style, Donnhoff are a little more peachy and sexy plus were the superstar ā€œdiscoveryā€ for a while, and of course Egon Muller had the pedigree plus more ā€œoomphā€.

And Kerpen I think just got lost in that. A terrible shame- they are really incredible IMHO.

I honestly don’t think they rise to the level of my favorite Rieslings, but it’s harder and more expensive (though, usually still not that expensive) for me to get 30±year old Auslesen from my favorite producers, and when I do get those, they often won’t have aged as perfectly. I think these Kerpen’s are just great buys at this auction.

Not only is Martin Kerpen a standup guy but if you ever need to show a Riesling-curious person what it’s all about, the auction Auslese is just about the perfect wine. I just wish they were more available.

I’ve not tried Kerpen before - I’ve bought these blind based on the MFW reviews (I generally find I’m quite aligned to their perspective). Good to hear these getting some support, looking forward to trying them now.
