2023 Chablis?

It looks like some 2023 Chablis is starting to hit the shelves where I live.
Has anyone had experience with this vintage? I wonder how it compares with the recent vintages.

I have been buying and drinking Christophe et Fils Chablis from 2017 vintage and I reckon the 2023 is possibly the best of the series. That’s all that I have seen so far.

I think something happened at LM with this one. That’s not typical of their Chablis at all.

I think it is a very decent vintage, but it is not a ‘squint inducing’ year. Reports of healthy grapes and a generous harvest. The wines are ripe but there is good Chablis character. I tasted all of the '23 Droin and Raveneau wines at the respective Domaines and was impressed. Also, have drunk a few from Chñteau de Fleys, for whom we import, and they are good.

WTF?

And people wonder why wine is seen as an elitist hobby?

Probably a French vs English thing. Didn’t expect such a visceral reaction .

Yep, looks like the guy who’s used it the most on WB is @Laurent_Gibet, than @William_Kelley and finally @Alex_Rychlewski. I’ll stick to “it’s a French thing”.

Phil, you seem like a good guy. I’ll trust you.

I still have NO inkling what that term means.

And I’m the king of the $20 word!

I tried a couple of Droin 2023 and found them lacking any sort personality or excitement. They felt a bit dull tbh. I prefer the 2022 for now.

Agreed - also found the 2023 Droins (PC Fourchaume & Village) to be a bit dull. Unsure about other producers and specific GCs that might have performed better.

Gee, Phil, this word hasn’t come up yet in my online French lessons on Duolingo . . .

But I am going to try to casually work it into a conversation with my wife Jacqueline to see her reaction. :wine_glass:

Luckily though, my Duolingo work allowed me to read the article he linked. I now understand the word, but it’s certainly not language that “opens” wine language.

So far, with regard to 2023, I’d still be backfilling 2021 Samuel Billaud.

All I know is that the last time I had a bout of empyreumatic, the doctor gave me some penicillin and that cleared it right up.

Is that sort of caramel or toast - never heard of this term? I had a bottle a week or two back and thought the wine rather broad with slight hint of toast or caramel, I wasn’t sure. I have a couple more in the kitchen wine fridge so Ill see how those turn out. The wine was not bad, just not great typicity for Chablis or LM Chablis.

Yes it is:

Had a 2023 Droin Chablis 2 days ago and found it to be very ripe. Lots of minerality, which I appreciated, but the overall balance was off. Seemed too big for me. Had it at around 10 Celsius and it only got worse as the wine warmed up.

Will try Droins 2023 Vaillons soon and will report back.
