Welcome to the 2021 vintage offering of Promontory. Kindly note, we traditionally allocate our bottles in cases of three.
2021 Promontory
$875 per bottle
Yeah, that’s gonna be a no from me dog. Can’t fault them for clawing back flipping profits, but this is almost retail for great vintages. Will they cut this in half for blah vintages like 22, which you’ll have to buy to stay on the list? Unlikely.
Good grief! The cost of the last Napa Valley Cabernet I purchased, also from the 2021 vintage and from a vineyard located just down the hill from Promontory, wouldn’t even cover the sales tax,
Serious question: how does anyone ever enjoy drinking $1000 bottle of wine? Especially one where you can certainly find equivalent style and quality for 20% of that, or less.
I will admit that the 14 promontory and 18 promontory are in my top 5 of best wines ive ever tasted. However, the pricing was already extremely high for those vintages. I knew i wasnt going to buy the 21s after getting just 1 bottle of the 2019. Fantastic wines, but insane pricing.
Whenever I get on the cool kids list I start to suspect. I finally got on Promontory 2021. To me, it looks like close to secondary mkt prices but still a notch below. I really don’t begrudge winemakers’ getting most of the vig from new releases— after all, they’re the guys what made the commodity in the first place. So to me the price is fair relative to market. Not gonna fault Promontory. At the same time — do I really need a $1000 wine (including tax and shipping)? I really would like to try Promontory but at that price … sadly, can’t justify it. I’m not going to get angry at the pricing — I wish them well and hope they sell out. But I cant participate because I don’t need the status check with my hedge fund “friends “.
I half-apologize for making this thread since $875 is just an arbitrary number. Whether it’s crazy or not depends on your budget. I guess my bigger complaint is the velocity of the price increase, which I’ve heard was just $600 in 2019? (Still not as bad as those clowns at Seven Stones.)
Anyways, while there are diminishing returns at these prices, I think there are still returns. Colgin is the most I’ll regularly spend on a Cab and I do see the difference against even $300 Cabs. (In fact, I might be giving the first 100 point score I’ve ever handed out to the Colgin I’m drinking right now.) I suppose somebody who buys cases of Harlan and Promontory per year without worry would be justified in making the same comparison against what I collect.
I really like Promontory and I highly recommend the tour. But the idea of “flipping” profits doesn’t really make sense as they trade at auction +/- $575.
