2021 German Vintage Report - Whats old is new...(UPDATED FOR VOM BODEN TOUR HIGHLIGHTS)

I just picked up my 2021 Donnhoff Eisweins from WHWC. Putting these in the depths of my cellar kind of feels like throwing the ring into Mount Doom (except, I’ll get them back).

Eiswein is the one pradikat where I almost always prefer it on the younger side. Even high end producer Eiswein.

I had a 1998 Donnhoff Eiswein 2 nights ago and it was legendary. Possibly the best wine I’ve ever had. The 2003 I had earlier this year was also excellent and one of my wines of the year.

I’m not questioning your experiences or opinion, but I’ve had some extraordinary experiences with Eisweins at 20+ years old.

Same here, I just prefer them younger, especially if they have any botrytis.

Well, on an average basis, it finished at €2,410 or $2,570, so just shy of the Keller kabikiste. Looking forward to sharing one of these in the future—a dinner for the Haart and Keller Kabikistes could be fun.

Weird auction. I won the first and was the second highest bidder on the 2nd and 3rd.

I was allowed to buy ONE (and only one) 375 ml. bottle of Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr 2021 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. Only a small quantity produced this vintage; thank you Johannes (Selbach)!

I managed to snatch a 375 ml. bottle of Dr. Hermann Erdener Prälat 2021 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese in a free-for-all grab for 12 bottles (max one bottle/person - it was, however, anything but free).
Only 33 litres made for the 2021 vintage.

The thing about TBA (and BA and Eiswein) is that they are insanely delicious in their decadent youth.

Now that we are talking about Dr Hermann… what are peoples thoughts about the wines? The 2021’sseems to get great reviews. They are very affordable!

Do you find they go through a dumb phase?

They are so darned sweet, so add that to the botrytis, and it’s really hard to tell.

Do you also think GKAs show well young? I don’t think they are bad young, but I think they are often far from their potential and occasionally slightly regret opening them so young. TBAs EWs etc are too expensive for me to risk infanticide, so I’ll have to take your word on those for now.

I love GKA young and old.

I am never afraid of missing out on potential. Too often I have seen great bottles sit there, and slide past their prime. I am trying to avoid that with my cellar…with mixed success.

Yes, however, with 2021 these TBAs have in access of 15 grams/litre acid!!:face_with_spiral_eyes:
It’s going to take an eternity or longer for the acid and sugar to integrate ideally. Realistically, I’ll settle for reasonable integration.

That’s happened before, but quite along time ago. I suspect the wines will always have a streak of lightning.

I prefer gka and BA to TBA - in fact the only TBA in my cellar id Muller Catoir’s 1998 Schlossel Rieslaner. I need an excuse to open one of those.
