2021 German Vintage Report - Whats old is new...(UPDATED FOR VOM BODEN TOUR HIGHLIGHTS)

You’re not alone. By the way, the 2022 Gisela measured at 84 degrees Oechsle, the same must weight as in the cooler 2021 vintage. Yields are kept low. Many producers had underripe grapes in '21.

I am glad you said you have tried them. I respect that and if you don’t like them that is cool.

I continue to drink them and for me it is a vintage that is perfect. We opened the 2021 Julian Haart Kiste, Keller Pettenthal, Absterde and Kirchspiel last night and they are already transcendental. I realize that does not help you much as these wines are impossible to find. I continue to drink wines from Ulli Stein, Max Kilburg, Lauer, Weiser-Künstler, Ludes etc. and I love them.

There are three Haart Kistes up for auction for charity in Germany now.

What is your guess on price? If I win I will ship them to Julian to hold…

No idea. Charity and tax status do weird things!

After last nights dinner I was pondering on what my bid ask would be for the case.

Time to figure out how to ship from eBay Germany…

Last nights Julian and Nadine Haart dinner.

I don’t have the capacity to write up detailed notes.

Overall it was a massive overload of the senses only comparable to seeing a great live musical performance.

Epic!

I’d love to organize one of these for the West Coast.

It is a tough dinner to recreate. Albert generously brought the 21 Kiste. A few us who have collected the wines since 2011 and Stephen Bitterolf from Vom Boden, who has been their importer since the beginning all made it work.

I could contribute a lot of the early wines for a West Coast event but saving my 21 Kabinett Kiste for a future date.

The Kabikiste wines are definitely the unicorns to slay and very generous opens given how rare they are. I’ve been buying Haart extensively since 2015 and was denied a Kabikiste from all my sources :sob:.

Let me know if you decide on something West Coast. I have a Kiste and happy to share if I can make the dinner.

I’m in SF if you ever make it up here that would be a lot of fun to organize! I’ve brought a few other collectors into the Haart fold so we could put together something pretty extensive I think.

Please include me if you do something in SF  . Would love to explore Haart or other similar producers further.

Always wise to try oneself. I nonetheless second Robert. I didn’t have a single underripe wine or bottle that disappointed me, though my sample is quite limited and narrow to a few producers (see below)

Keller’s VdF - incredible depth/intensity of fruit (underripe is not part of its vocabulary) and took on a spicy dish like it was at the very least a Kabinett.

Falkenstein Egon and both Stein’s Palmberg (trocken) and Himmelrich Kabinett were in great form. The latter three all started to show more fruit definitions and depth from second/third night onward.

Again a small sample but I wouldn’t say that the above are specifically for acid freaks, very balanced and complete wines.

I’m defending my bids well so far, but wondering if this ends up being more than the 2021 Keller Kabikiste…

It definitely will.

Thinking about bringing one of the bottles to Manresa!
