Pigato is an ancient biotype of Vermentino grown in Liguria. Genetically Pigato and Vermentino are similar but there are differences. Pigato is native to the western region of Riviera di Ponente especially the regions of Genoa, Imperia and Savona. It is generally grown at higher elevations than Vermentino and the grapes have a speckled or blotchy look to them.
2021 Claudio Vio Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente: Lovely spicy floral aroma, along with citrus, green peach, sea air and thyme.
Flavors of stone fruit, peach, nectarine, grapefruit pith, sage and a slight bitter note adds to the complexity. Good acidity, medium texture and mouthfeel with a fruit and mineral driven finish. Very nice wine. This has the stuffing to age and develop for many years. 13% ABV.
For sure will be looking for more though I was told not much is brought into the US.
Was fantastic with cedar planked Alaskan King Salmon.
The salmon looks burnt in the photo below but it was the plank that burnt, the salmon was perfect!
