Last night, we had a 2020 and a 2021 Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Kabinett side by side and it was a fascinating comparison. The 2020 is what I would say is an excellent medium bodied Kabinett with good but not excessive residual sugar and excellent acidity. This is a type of wine Haart does so well. The 2021 was an entirely different animal. Leaner, not as much obvious fruit or sweetness but a lot of complexity with more of a sort of saline quality. Sort of the essence of Kabinett without any frill. What did I like better? I don’t know. I love wines like the 2020 but I have a cellar full of them, including many from Haart, but I don’t have too many like the 2021. I love what I love, but I also love a fascinating wine like the 2021 that is a bit old school.
