2015 Rotem & Mounir Saouma Magis Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc

I`m pulling this out of a thread posted earlier today as this wine merits special mention and attention, especially to those who are not familiar with it:

2015 ROTEM & MOUNIR SAOUMA MAGIS CHATEAUNEUF du PAPE BLANC- 75% Grenache Blanc, 10% Clairette, 10% Roussanne and 5% Bourboulenc, aged 18-24 months; 14.0% abv; a buddy in this dinner group brought this wine last year and I had to have it, this being the 4th bottle I’ve opened since buying a 6 pack; as with 2 of the 3 previous bottles, this one was in balance with flint, mineral and wet stone notes dominating the underlying citrus fruit; lemon, lime, pear and green apple; it had evenly distributed acidity, flint and minerals along with a buttery, vanilla like component and an oily texture; the back label suggests this should be decanted and I agree although I’ve failed or forgot to do so on all 4 occasions; OK, I got it; I’ve got 2 to decant. Lesson learned.
BTW, it was my WOTN and perhaps for others who raved about it and one shared it with another wine centric table in the restaurant.
As an aside, I do not recall ever finding a punt as deep as the one on this bottle; it’s 2 1/2 “ deep and very wide plus this bottle is HEAVY.

Cheers,
Blake

Thanks for the note. I will have to try to track down some of this wine. I’ve had their Omnia bottling, which really changed my perception of what CdP can be.

I love their wines. Very elegant, but those bottles are wine rack killers. Enjoyed reading your note.

It’s a great wine. One of the top three white CDPs to my mind.

I love this wine . I inserted it in a blind tasting of white Burgundy many times , NOBODY recognised it as white CNP . Most thought Corton Charlemagne from a sunny year ( like 2015… )
The wine makers Mounir and Rotem are friends of mine . They believe in long elevages , contrary to the believe in the region that a white wine should be bottled in approx 1 year . Contrary to his white Burgundies , where on occasion the wines are bizarre , this one always was excellent . There are differences in vintages , the real hot ones are more difficult . But 2015 for example rocks imo .
Besides the Magis , they also make in very limited quantities another wine ( Arioso white ) , result of very long elevages ( 3 years plus ) and made only in magnums . This is also really great wine , high in alcohol but you don’t taste it .

as did the Magis for me

Agreed, Wonder why it is seemingly obscure? Price? It’s ~ $100 or more although I got it for $75 x 6.

Thanks for the tip on the Arloso white. I’m on the hunt.

Blake , in Belgium , this is sold by a " coffret " , a case of 3 magnums with only 1 white and 2 red wines . Expensive but they are worth it .

Herwig, were I able to travel internationally, I would be in the Netherlands which would make it easy to pick up a coffret. Where in Belgium is the shop located?

Have to keep an eye out for the Magis. The Omnia red is the most Burgundian CNdP I have ever tasted (in a very good way)

Great to know. Any current sources?

I purchased at Burgundy Wine Company.
