2015 Balagny Beaujolais

My goodness, what a delicious wine. Tremendous balance of fruit and acidity, with a firm floral backbone. Day 1 I was digging it more and more with every sip.

Managed to save a glass and came back two days later - really strange development of dark chocolate and hazelnut on both the nose and palate. Like one of those Ritter chocolate hazelnut bars. Seriously, one of the most nutty (literally and figuratively) characteristics in a red I’ve ever experienced. The fruit is still there, though dialed back. Same with the floral notes. The nuttiness takes over. At the very tail end of the long finish it almost resembles the kind of nut flavors you find in certain sherry or even vin Jaune. Thoughts? What’s doing that??? Still enjoyable day 3, but really strange.

Natural wine.
Low sulfur.
Bacteria.

mousiness indeed

Sounds good. And interesting.
Just picked mine up from our friend.
Julie Blagny is bomb.

These wines are between $35-$50 retail one Seattle, I’ve wanted to try them but there’s too much Bojo I want to taste from 15’ without spending that much coin.

Jason,

You can try one next time you’re in Bellingham; just let me know! [cheers.gif]

My bottle was around $35 and I’d say it’s worth it (for a bottle or two, not a frequent drinker).

Brad nailed this wine. At least on night one, Drinking it now, and the balance is impeccable right out of the gate. So packed with drippy, juicy, fruit that has no flab to it and acid that gives life and lift.
Pure and clean and so drinkable.
I really like Julie’s wines. Across the board, they are in my wheelhouse.
I woulda say this is worth the asking price, though not a great buy in the context of Beaujolais.

Opened another bottle of this tonight. See my note above. Really dig this wine. Pure, drippy red fruit and a lifting acidity. It takes a little bit of air to get it to open up. Fun wine. Not deep, complex, nor worthy of introspection. Poundable.

But did you save some in the bottle to check on day 3?? : )

i love her wines but it is a shame she had fermentation issues the past two vintages with her fleuries. the 2015 moulin a vent is fantastic though and manages to escape any surmaturité.

Past two vintages as in '16 and '17? Sorry to hear that. Just saw the '15 Fleurie Sex Appeal (!) hit the market here in Atlanta.

2014 and 2015. not sure about the yet to be released vintages. because the fermentation was stuck she blended all the parcels together to make the sex appeal. i have yet to try it but heard it’s not great. in 2014 a similar thing happened and she had to completely declassify the wine to vin de france with the simone c’est moi.

Thanks for this info. Helpful.

i guess it was not a good sign when the 2015 moulin a vent arrived early last fall and the fleurie was only released quite recently.

She has a 14 Chavot which is pretty good…

The 15 Sex Appeal is not good…very very ripe…sweet…As soon as you pour it you think WTF…Nothing like what I’d want or expect…

the 2014 chavot is decent but for me pales in comparison to her single parcel wines she released in 2013.

Those 13s were the wines that hooked me. Great stuff.

crush was closing out the 2013 la grande rose for $34 a bottle on yesterdays email blast

Yep. I tried and missed it. Nice price.
