My first pure Graciano. Pop and pour. The color is very dark for a 9 year old Rioja, which I guess has no oak. The aromas offer excellent intensity, very floral (violets, roses), with notes of blackberry and maybe blueberry. The palate is pretty light in body, but with freshness, lift and vigor. The mid-palate is rather hollow, which is a shame, and the finish is a little abrupt, with a slightly astringent note. My guess is that this was at its best 5 years ago, but it’s still really good wine. Rated 88.
I bought this a few days ago at a store that specializes in closeouts. This is hands-down the best single-digit retail wine I’ve had in years, but of course it’s the only one. I remember that list price was $8.80, but I think as part of a mixed case I paid ~$7.50. I would happily buy six more bottles to have on hand for company, but I’d much rather splurge $10+ for a younger vintage. This is ridiculously good wine for the money.
