Any recent experiences with 2014 Volnay? I have a bottle of Clos des Ducs and have been considering backfilling some more D’Angervilles but haven’t had any from 2014.
I have always found that with Burgundies the most important thing is to buy and drink what you like, not what is rated highest or is the most popular. Certainly, that is true for all wines, but I think the stylistic difference among producers, among wines from different vintages and from different terroirs, etc., to be greater in Burgundy than in other regions from which I drink wine. Usually, preferences match those of many others (Lots of Burgundy lovers love Dujac, for example), but where they don’t, consider yourself lucky and grab the “bargains”. Sometimes, the market eventually agrees with you and prices go up.
By the way, I bought very little in the way of 2003s because I thought the wines would not be of my style. I did buy a bunch of 2003 Truchots, however, because he is my favorite producer and the wines were really well-priced. When young, the wines were not great compared with other wines from Truchot. However, with age, each time I go back to these wines they get better and better - and they still are not fully mature. I have often wondered if other producers made good 2003s and whether I should have bought more.
Interesting note about 2003. Most people stayed away from that vintage as much as possible and I have seen numerous notes over maybe the last 5+ years with quite a bit of praise.
I had the Champans 14 in 2023 and it was drinking well. Caveat, I’ve mostly found all villages and 1er from Côte de Nuits ready to go in the last 2 years (Côte de Beaune are mostly not though).
I think the knock on 2018 is that it’s a really ripe vintage. There’s always variation between producers and cuvees in any vintage. I recall visiting one producer and saying “wow, these are the most open barrel samples I’ve ever had” and the producer responded that “yes, this vintage reminds me a lot of 2003”.
But you’re judging 2018 based on wines from some of your favorite producers (and I don’t really like 2018 Duroche) whereas you’ve not really tried 2013s; that skews the results. Great 2013s I’ve had in the last year: Duroche, Bouley, d’Angerville, Rousseau, Dujac, Gibourg, Felletig, Mugnier. It isn’t the greatest vintage, but I’ve had better success with it than 2018 for sure.
Hoping for some more 2014 experiences! I’m not in love with 2014 vs. riper vintages. But I have a case of 2014 Chevillon LSG that was great in youth, and I’m waiting to get at them. Will probably pull one later this year and give it a go.
Very seductive, just flat-out gorgeous nose. Primarily dark fruited with wild strawberries, dark cherries, roses, black tea, forest floor. Makes its presence on the palate known with a very clean fruit expression. I’m guessing this still has some upside to it but it’s very much in the zone.
I was trying to remember if I’d opened any 2014s recently and finally recalled a bunch of jouan msd clos sorbes from, last year. They were still a bit young but absolutely delicious with an hour or two decant
