2013 Brunello in general

I have a several producers from this vintage-regular not riserva and wondered what’s the drinking window for 2013s? Kind of vague but allows for more discussion.

Here’s the note for the one 2013 I’ve had:

  • 2013 Máté - Podere il Falconaio Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (10/14/2021)
After 1.5 hours in decanter, tannin almost imperceptible, strawberry supported by darker fruits and dust, and open for business. Initial taste was a bit closed off, strongly advise 1-2 hour decant. Years of life left (94 pts.)

Edit: not 2012, that was the CT picture

I have consumed only a handful of 2013s and all of them were in 2019 and 2020. The ones I have record of are listed below. I have a few of each of them remaining besides Fanti (0 remaining), Le Gode (1 remaining) and I also have a handful of others. I dont have any intention of opening anymore of them until 2024+, but I am sure plenty are in a decent spot at this point. I would check CT if there are particular bottles you are considering opening.

Castello Romitorio
Cortonesi La Mannella
Elia Palazzesi
Fanti
Pertimali - Livio Sassetti
Le Gode

I opened a 2013 Fuligni last night from a case I bought on release. First one I’ve opened (though I’ve had it before). Made chicken marsala and a panzanella.

Sensational, and in a beautiful spot as wood and tannin are integrating. Developing some dusty iron notes, tobacco, bright cherry fruit, savory herbs and bbq spice. Really balanced, well integrated, silky smooth and complex. It’s light and bright, and not at all too big deep and brooding. It’s an absolute delight, and in that 94-95 creeping into real excellence range. Might not be quite as truly complex as something bigger and badder, like a 2016 Piccolomini Pianrosso, but it just might be more enjoyable to drink.

Funny i just opened this a few nights ago. Was drinking well, no need to wait unless you prefer wines on the more tertiary end. Ahould hold where it is for a couple years.

I think 2013 is very under-valued vintage for Sangiovese (let’s keep it that way  ). I prefer it to 2015 and just a notch below 2010/2016

I agree, Matt.

I’m with Matt and Jeff - great Sangiovese vintage. I just checked CT and I have a total of 38 notes posted on 12 different wines. The Rosso’s from Pian dell’Orino and Stella di Campalto are both excellent, and I’ve also enjoyed Felsina’s Rancia and CC multiple times.
