2012 Shafer Hillside Offering Out

I’ve been waiting for this one…$265 per with $1 shipping on a six-pack. Does anyone recall the price from last year? I have $250 in my head. Obviously this is a great vintage…but why does the good stuff always have to hit the inbox on days when the market is getting hit?! The correlation is pretty high. If I had known last week this was coming today I probably would have added to my short position last week.

Still a no-brainer I suppose…

Yes, regular buy for me. Probably a mag as well.

2009: $240
2010: $250
2011: $250

It’s up there and getting steeper, but one of our favorite wines.

Don’t know the threshold yet for pricing, but hopefully SHS never gets there.

Tom

There will be plenty available in the secondary market at or near release price. No need to rush at least for me.

I think from the little rubberized booklet they sent me last year, it was blessed with the RP 100, so not sure the secondary market will have endless supplies at release, but you never know.

That said, the offer says that orders of at least one bottle need to be ordered by 8/1 to secure your spot. Does anyone know whether or not these are guaranteed allocations or first come?

I don’t think 2012 would be a particular better vintage, in my mind, for a wine in the style of SHS. It’s a wine that can come close to the “too soft, too plush, not enough structure” line in ripe, less tannic vintages. I know I was very disappointed in the 2004, for example.

I would think 2010 and 2013 would be much better. That’s just my speculation and personal tastes, though - obviously this is a high quality wine every year. And I haven’t tasted these recent vintages, so it’s just my speculation.

Chris…I have had the 2004 twice in the last few years and really enjoyed it. A dinner a few weeks ago included 2004-2007…the 2005 was my favorite.

Order in.
I don’t remember if it was $1 shipping last year.
Always a buy for me.

Ive only bought Relentless and i get offered HSS every year, they are not selling out so no rush to buy

Release date is 9/1/2016 yet there are 2 cellartracker reviews. How can this be?

I guess i didnt make the list for 2012 HSS

Pretty sure there is not final score yet, so it’s only RP 98-100. Most likely when it does hit retail you’ll be able to find it a discount to release price, at least for a period of time if it gets a 100 point score, then all bets are off. If it gets anything but 100, it will easily be available at release price or less for a while.

I put together an order for 2 750s and got to the final review page - with tax and $41 shipping (only option) to Texas, it brought each bottle up to over $300. i bailed.

I will drink a 750 by myself tomorrow and then reconsider. [cheers.gif]

You’re right. I went back to the booklet when I got back and saw, 98-100. I guess we will wait and see. I logged in to check it out and it was like $290 all in per bottle. I’m holding off for a little while but may buy a few.

Most likely barrel tasting would be my guess.

What exactly is shafers shipping policy. A per bottle cost at $300 is getting mighty steep when the bottle alone is $265.

HSS is great stuff but its the age old argument, is it 3 times better that Ridge MB ? twice as good as Roy Piper ? 3 times better that Becklyn Reserve ( NO is that answer ) 3 times better than Saxum JBV

I just think that currently $150 is the ceiling required for world class wine if your buy wisely, there are US wines in most varietals that can hold their own against almost anything except the absolute elite which $750 +

I think the Piper is its equal.

I’ve always thought the same thing… never heard anyone actually say it though! However, I have not tasted a cooler year version either. Even if I was a fan, I don’t think that I would be buying at $250+.
