I received a solicitation to buy this pre-release today for under $30 per bottle. There seems to be some discussion periodically on this producer, so I’m here to ask if this is a good value pick? I see on wine searcher that some of the previous vintages sell from mid $30’s up to mid $50’s. Thanks in advance for any info on this wine.
Bump, interested too.
An old Mike Hirby project that I believe was sold off after the 2006 vintage. I still have s few from 2004 and 2006. I know Mike got fruit from there in 2007 and did a wonderful cab that year of which I have two.
It would be interesting to see what else can be said of this.
This is from an email received years back from Peter Snowden
BTW, when I questioned shipping he said that it would be $180 to ship six bottles to which the wines would be…free. Great sense of humor!
Dear Friend,
So, what has a bucket list got to do with 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon? Well in our case, a lot. We will no longer be producing wine. Yes, I know; you pictured us growing old wandering through the vineyard with our thinning shears. And, actually, that part will continue. We love being grape farmers. However, our ever growing bucket list, and that little thing about time going by, collided with spending time in the office, and we opted to go tackle the list. In fact, we started this last summer by driving our boat up the West Coast to explore the San Juan Islands and the fjord inlets of British Columbia. By the end of the summer we were pretty crusty old salts.
We invite you to purchase our last new releases at less than the wholesale price of many previous Rockledge wines, as a way of saying thank you for your support and interest over the years.
This offer will end on April 30th or when the wines sell out.
2006 Rockledge Cabernet Sauvignon - The Rocks
You are likely interested in hearing about Rockledge’s final vintage. With the wines of 2003, 2004, and 2005, the Rockledge cabernet became smoother and richer with each vintage as winemaker Mike Hirby became more familiar with our vineyard blocks. In 2006 we decided to stretch out our hang time well into the harvest season. Weather was nearly perfect in October as the flavors evolved. As a result, this is the biggest Rockledge cabernet by far. Robert Parker says the wine will last for 15-20 years at the minimum: “…set to turn into something potentially outstanding if given 3-4 years of bottle age.” It is packed with classic Rockledge flavors of dark fruits, plum, sage, clove and other spices. We recommend an extended decanting.
2007 Rockledge Chardonnay Alder Springs - The Emerald Pool
High in the hills above Laytonville lies the striking Alder Springs Vineyard. Our block - Emerald Pool – which is situated 2500 feet above sea level produces some of the best wines in the vineyard. “The wine exhibits even more fragrance due to the powerful fruit character as well as the vibrant, medium to full-bodied flavors in the mouth.” The Wine Advocate 91-92
You’ll also discover small quantities of Primitivo in the online store.

Interested too. BUT, notes in CT are not really exciting, and ratings not real high. Wonder why they did not make a cab in 2007??
According to the WineAccess e-mail, Mike Hirby is still the winemaker.
interesting.
His name is mentioned related to the 2007 vintage.
love this line from WineAccess:
How does the latest release of “The Rocks” compare to the monumental 2007? As Parker suggested, this 2012 makes its predecessor look utterly pedestrian.
The 2007 Relic Rockledge is a deal at $60 right now. The 2012 must be (better be) awesome…
In the tasting note at the bottom of the e-mail, it is made clear that Hirby made the 2012.
If these wines are so good I do not understand why seemingly every vintage is offered at a dramatic discount from the winery price.
I missed that as I rarely read their internal tasting notes.
I noticed in CT that people have 112 bottles in their cellars, and have drunk 6 bottles.
Hey, if you have the wine or have tried it, let us know what it is like (pleeease)!
