I took a shipment of wine into my wine cave this evening. Foolishly, I did not put on the light as I entered. I kicked into some bottles that I had not yet put into the racks. I felt the liquid on my bare feet. I quickly realized it must have been a bottle of Rhys for I had not yet racked them. I turned the light on and confirmed it was indeed a Rhys. But not just any bottle, but the 2012 Home Vineyard Pinot Noir…
The nose as it mixed with my cellar flooring was exquisite. It filled the room. Took a deep breath, picked up the broken glass and went to get the bucket.
An hour later, there is a little bit of staining, and still some of that lovely nose. I am sure that it would have been a glorious wine. I will commence weeping.
I am so sorry for your loss. I have yet to open a Home of any vintage myself (intentionally or otherwise), and I know if this happened to me I would be upset. Here’s to hoping that wine karma comes back to you soon, in the best possible way.
Thanks, Dr. Don and the rest. When your going to do a bone head thing you might as well go all the way! Clearly my big toe chooses the best.
Don - Will enjoy getting together soon. I keep threatening to organize a Rhys / Alesia tasting and I know a lot of us locally have some great bottle. I have six years - I think - of Rhys Chards to taste through. All the best, John
I feel your pain, not too long ago I went away for several days and the door to my wine fridge hadn’t been closed tight and when I got back the temp had dropped to 16 degrees. I lost about six bottles due to freezing and the corks disgorging and one was a 2010 Rhys Bearwallow that I hadn’t initially seen on first inspection and that was my last bottle.
I’ve been thinking about putting some sort of rubber mat over the tile floor in my cellar. Would hate to have to clean that up (not to mention losing the bottle).
