2012 Domaine Vaquer ‘Cuvee Bernard’ Cotes Catalanes (Carignan)

Non-commercial post: I imported this wine, but we stopped representing the Domaine soon thereafter.

Saturated ruby almost to the rim. The aromas feature red and black raspberry, black pepper and hints of ground cumin. The palate is medium to full bodied with a very solid, fine-grained texture. This is vigorous, but stops well short of rude. A muscular, polite adolescent who is not in your face. The finish lasts 20+ seconds and is unusually harmonious. This Carignan-based wine is a truly fine example of ageworthy rusticity. Rated 92, may not improve but will evolve and hold for at least another 3 years. I’ve got most of a case left. Mostly for guests, I won’t mind drinking it by myself, but only if the grub is really good.
