2010 Easton Zinfandel Fiddletown Old Vine, Rinaldi Vineyard
First a shout-out to my local wine store: Black Sheep wines, on Mountain Road in Harpswell, Maine. When I want something different, good and interesting, John is always there (except Sunday and Monday), in a sterling eclectic fun store. No Zin in my basement and it’s what I wanted for the 4th of July.
John’s recommendation. I’m dubious about Amador Zin, having had too many that were too soft, too heavy and too alcoholic. John told me to go ahead and the 14.5% alky (vs the more usual 15 – 16%) added confidence.
Medium ruby color. There is a touch of bramble to the aromas that are otherwise redolent of blackberries and red plums, not particularly varietal. The palate is balanced with lively acidity, some definite earthy notes but not at all rustic. This is a surprise. I’m not sure I would have said Zinfandel tasted blind and the zingy vivacity and purity of black fruit flavors (the red plums are not there on the palate) lead me in another direction… the style is almost closer to Northern Rhone Syrah.
This does not have great body or concentration, another surprise, but excellent balance and freshness make this an eager participant in the holiday festivities featuring local pork, grilled Satay style, with local fresh-shucked peas, asparagus and new potatos.
