Colour medium deep, rim maturing red, good clarity.
Nose of strong tobacco, with earth and plums. More Pessac than Margaux. Seems Merlot led.
The tannin was soft as was the acidity. The fruit was broad, slightly lumpy, and much more Merlot than Cabernet. Over a couple of hours it became slightly finer and more focused.
No need to keep it, but it will last. Good rather than great, more Friday night than Sunday lunch wine. Approx 90 points or ***1/2.
Thanks for the note. 5 years or so ago, I came across some older Labégorce-Zédé, which impressed me as qpr and did seem to have some Margaux-ish character, to the extent that I can discern such. It seems like this estate Labégorce hoovered up the other–the two had previously been one and then split–which seems unfortunate given your note.
Thanks for sharing, I have couple of these 10s deep asleep and have been wondering if they’re ready. A few years ago, JJ Buckley had a good amount of 1995 and 1996 mags for $95, tried both, fantastic QPR.
I bought 6 many years ago and this is the first of them I have pulled the cork on. I will try a second in the next few weeks and will report back if there is any bottle variation.
