2008 Burgundy - like 2001,2004, 1996...?

John Gilman and Allen Meadows have responded differently to 2008 red Burgundy, many wines radiant for Gilman and over the piece highly variable for Meadows. Bill Nanson feels the wines are still too “full of gas”, post-Malo, to permit definitive judgment.
Have there been any 2008 red Burgundy barrel tastings yet in the US? What’s the general feeling about the vintage? Any vintage comparisons spring to mind?

Hello Nigel,

There are certainly some extremely good 2008 red Burgundies, but I feel it is the kind of vintage where you’ll do best buying from serious producers; avoid cheapies from the ordinary and under-whelming. Vintage comparisons are somewhat difficult, but I’d venture that the best wines have the ripeness and accessibility of the best 2001s but with the slightly spiky acid/tannin character of 2004: so somewhere between the two.

I’ve only written up one of the 08 en primeur tastings I’ve attended (a few people also added comments with their views about the vintage) and at the end of my post there are some links to the barrel sample tastings of 08s I had with various producers when I was in Burgundy last summer. If you are interested my post is here. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
David.

David,
Thanks for the reply - and the link to your notes on your tastigs of 2008. I luckily got wind of the Hudelot before Allren Meadows gave them a very good review. Like you I love Lambrays so am betting on it coming round. But will any of these 2008’s prices ever be lower than the en primeur prices?
Nigel

Hi Nigel,

Probably not, en primeur is the way forward for picking up less insanely priced Burgundy. Buy some whilst it is cheap.

Cheers,
David.
