How many champagnes can you describe as badass? This wine looks more like a sparkling red burgundy than a rose, and it has a muscular personality to match. There is a ton going on in this wine. It’s got your citrus-and-mineral thing, natch, but there are also lots of cherry and blackberry notes too. And on top of that, there is enough nervous energy to make it zip in the mouth. A very unusual, maybe even unique, champagne experience.
If you have bottles of this and were wondering whether now was a good time, I would say yes, but this wine is going to get better for years. I have 2 more (I think) and probably won’t drink another for at least 5 years.
Agreed - I absolutely love this wine. It is an atypical Rose that you could easily mistake for red Pinot Noir with some bubbles. Just a fun wine that has plenty of character and class. It is definitely unique as nothing else out there is like this. I don’t like a lot of what Jacquesson is doing, but I consistently like this wine. Also, as good as the 07 is, the 08 is slightly better.
Sounds really interesting even though I’m not a big Rose fan. Interested enough to check winesearcher.com, but with an average price of $173 for the 2008 an easy pass.
Ha! I checked too after Brad chimed in. Not a likely purchase for me. I bought these bottles in Reims at Caves du Forum, which will make any champagne lover’s heart go pitter patter. And I didn’t pay anything like $170/btl
Rare Wine Co. usually carries Jacquesson, and I suspect that when the new vintage is introduced it would be a good place to pick some up. They don’t seem to have a single bottle at the moment though
Like Neal, I purchase mine in Champagne and the price is a good deal lower than $100. At the current exchange rate, I think $70-80 would be the norm and this wine is well worth it at this price. It really is a treat in each and every vintage.
I’m going to be the contrarian here (not about the rosé, which I love), but after tasting 734 DT, 736 and 738 recently, I think there’s some strong work at this address. The 737 left me a little cold, yes’, but the other 7-- releases and the single vineyards are pretty amazing.
I’m always looking for new champagnes to try and the DT sounds really interesting. The DT isn’t available in the US but the 736 is in stock at several stores; its an extra brut champagne, any comparisons or notes you could pass on?
The 736 has the laser precision you expect from an Extra Brut, with a toastiness and nuttiness that gives it enough richness and complexity to be special. It has gotten better with time under cork. Foodwise, it needs something comparably taut and precise to really shine. The 737 was too chiseled for my tastes - it was all top notes with no bass. I was a little worried about where things were going here, but the 738 was a nice return to form, and a big hit at my bubbles bar.
