Bought 2 of these on the KL closeout last year and thought they would be good to drink while some of the other vintages were getting a little more age. Wish now I’d bought a case. Stood upright in cellar for a week. Pulled the cork at 10AM and left bottle in cellar. Poured in the decanter at 3PM and served with osso bucco at 7:30. Wonderful wine that is ready to drink now given sufficient air. Smelled the bottle when opened and was a little concerned that it might be a raisiny, prune mess, but when served at dinner it was much different. Deep barolo nose of roses, tar and dark fruit. On the palate, medium+ body, with red fruit, dark fruit and licorice with resolved tannin, nice acidity and a long, long finish. Just singing. If you bought some of these try one now!
This is delicious. Helped myself to 4 on the KL offer and opened one a couple of months back. Pop and pour and drinking well from the start. Even better as the night progressed.
I had the 2000 Bussia Soprano bottling two years ago at Marea here in NYC and it was scrumptuous. It had that classic Aldo Conterno silkiness. It was quite ready to drink then.
The 2001 Granbussia was also under $100. I think it was 94.99. Got 4 of both the '00 & '01. The '00 was great with a lot of air. Haven’t popped an '01 just yet. Bought a whole bunch of the other designate wines from '04-'06 (romirasco, cicala & colonello) , all of which were below $75
For me, easily the best bargain deal of 2012. Two cases in full of mixed aldo.
Huge win for the board since it tipped the sale at K&L and WHWC for me. Had a bottle of the 2000 Granbussia in February at Fiola in DC, really a beautiful wine and IMHO reasonably open as a pop and pour, though it improved with air over the course of the meal. Also picked up 3 of the 2001 and a couple 2005 Cicala and 2004 Romirasco (which I would rest for 2-3 years).
I also went in for a couple of mixed cases of these. Thought the 2000 would be approachable while the others got a little more age. After tasting this 2000 I wish I had bought more of everything. I remember the lengthy discussion about these. Some thought there must be something wrong with them because the prices were so reasonable, but if the rest are as good as this one bottle I’ve had, this is certainly the best deal I’ve come across in many years.
I think k&l did the right thing in sending Greg st. Claire over there to satisfy customer concerns over the quality of the wines being offered. I can just imagine that day for Greg. As Bill Lumburgh would say, " yeah…we’re going to need you to fly out there…Saturday, and , yeah, taste all the Aldo’s you can, yeah…and we’re going to need you to taste them again Sunday…okay?". That must’ve been a great trip. Hope he locked up his swingline before he left the office.
