I didn’t take notes, so these are brief rehashes by memory:
2000 Louis Michel Les Clos
Decent concentration, mild acidity and some lemony chalky flavors, but some weird cheesiness that detracts. Overall solid but not great. Not in the same category as the other producers.
2000 Louis Michel Vaudesir
Cleaner than the Les Clos, some bright lime acidity and more chalk, medium length but little complexity and I don’t think it’s going to go the distance. Both Michels were a little disappointing versus the competition.
2000 Brocard Bougros
Lemon chiffon, brine and just a hint of creaminess that balances out the acid. This is pretty good stuff.
2000 Brocard Les Clos
I’ve had this multiple times since release, it’s always been very bright and tangy possibly lacking some fruit concentration to balance out the acid. This was still surprisingly youthful and bright, but I wonder if it will ever fully round into balance. Still, enjoyable for those that can tolerate some zing.
2000 Dauvissat La Forest
Darker with more fruit concentration than the others, still very youthful and barely any tertiary development. Hints of candied lemon and hefty minerals to balance the riper fruit here. Very nice.
2000 Ravenau Montmains
Just a different level despite PC status. This had both higher concentration and more complexity, lemon mirangue pie, rich yet zippy, a mint/basil to go with the stony minerals and apple, lemon, lime fruits. Just lovely, it always bums me out when I find out that some of the hype is deserved because it means I have to squirrel away lots of money to try to buy some of the big boy stuff.
Random throw in:
2007 Brewer Clifton Sta. Rita Hills Chard
I’m always looking for a domestic Chard that can hang stylistically with white Burg. This is the baby of the BC line, it wasn’t terribly out of place but still was somewhat distinctive with some tropical fruit peeking through and, on day 2, seemed to show a little bit of wood, which may be a result of its relative youth. I will have to find more from this producer and lay them down to see what happens.
Further random non-2000 drink
2005 Fevre Preuses
Much sweeter than the 2000s, some serious concentration with sweet fruit, some tangerine, no stern minerality and acid which you’d suspect from a 5 year old CG Chablis. Super approachable after 30 minutes of air. Delicious but certainly atypical.
Overall, a decent showing from a medium year in Chablis, I enjoyed most of these. The Michel were a little disappointing, but otherwise these all were solid. No premox in the crowd, yeah!
