1997 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Rubis

COOL old school label! These just came off the truck, and are for wedding anniversary…so, NOT going to pop one just yet. Anyone have one of these of late? This will be my oldest Vilmart to date, so wondering how they age?

Thanks! champagne.gif

Per CT this might be the first vintage of Rubis too…

Very cool, I’ll be interested to hear when you do pop them. I’m still holding a couple 98 cuvee Creation.

You have two! Pop one and post a note so we can all live vicariously or you’re selfish. neener

I’d go ahead and pop one sooner rather than later. I had a 1996 Vilmart Coeur for New Year’s Eve and it was about as mature as I like my Champagne. I plan to drink my remaining bottles by the end of the year. NB: I don’t really love truffled, sherried, white chocolaty old Champagne without bubbles.

I would guess it’s time to get to those.

Cool bottle. Was this a recent purchase? Around 5-6 years ago a large parcel of this wine showed up in the US and I never figured out where it came from. It wasn’t direct from Vilmart and Vilmart didn’t know where it came from either. Only about 2,000 bottles of this were produced so the fact that 120+ bottles all of a sudden came into the market at one time after nothing being on the market for years was a bit odd. The last time I had this wine was from that parcel when it was first offered and the wine was fairly mature, but still showing well. In future vintages the wine only got better, but this debut vintage is a fun wine and one that I think is best enjoyed now unless you like your Rose aged with plenty of forest floor and savory, slightly spicy notes.

As a side note, the 97 Grand Cellier Rubis was the first ‘official’ release of Vilmart’s vintage Rose (now known as Emotion). There was a vintage Grand Cellier Rose or something similar (can’t recall the exact name) made in either 1988 or 1989, but it was a one off.

Oh, dig these oldies. Cool photo, thank you.

I checked my CT notes and thanks to the generosity of Steve Nordhoff, we’ve had 1998 CdC and 1998 Cellier Rubis back in 2018, but not had 1997 before. What a treat to drink some of this history when you finally open them.

I’d imagine, but how will I ever “@uduze” properly without test subjects.

One of these are going down tomorrow night…25th anniversary weekend ahead! :champagne:

Looks lovely. I’m a big Vilmart fan. How did those burg glasses turn out on an aged champ like this?

Worked out really well! Brought out amazing aromatics, and surprisingly still plenty of refreshing bubble tingle. They were going to give us flutes, and the white wine glass was too small I thought. Not the best of glassware here.

Flutes on vilmart would be a crime. Thats why I’m the wine nerd(snob) who always lugs his own glasses around. Still trying to find the perfect champagne glass though. That color looks amazing. Still a lot of fruit left? Many oxidative notes?
