1996 Vega Sicilia Unico 1996 a perfect wine

Instantly, at the first sip, I knew it was perfection. And when I am in front of perfection, I do not try to analyze, I try to enjoy.
What strikes me is the fluidity of this wine. There is an enormous fruit, black fruit, there is mint, fennel, blackcurrant leaves, but all that is wrapped in fluidity.
Generous, endless, with a load of complexity, it is the wine that you would love for ever.
I am a big fan of VSU and I have drunk more than 40 different vintages of this wine. But I have rarely had at such a level the impression of total perfection.

Interesting - thanks for your comments.

My fav was 1975 (over 1970). Never have a chance to try the 1968.

My last buy of Unico was from 1980.

If I have a chance to see the 1996 in Quebec, Canada I will buy it…

1996? You sure you don’t mean 1896 or 1796?

I know! François, such a young wine for you to drink! [cheers.gif]

This posting was the blame for opening a 1995 right now [cheers.gif]

update:

Its not a perfect wine, but almost!
Perfect in the nose, colour as one can expected (but some times Spanisch wines looks younger!) Totaly integrated tannins, expensive wood and a fantastic afther taste.
Excuse me for as you have noticed already, Englisch is not my native language champagne.gif

best regards, and 97 points on my scale

Harry

Thanks for the notes ! Did not have the chance to taste the Unico 1996 …

Unico perfection for me so far was the - NV Unico Reserva Especial blend of 1990, 1994, and 1996.

I agree. The 1996 VSU is very good wine. I’ve only drank 2 other vintages of this wine before, so I have limited sample size, but was very enamored with the power, class and complexity when I decided to splurge and order a bottle with dinner at Mugaritz some years ago. As I recall, at just north of Euro 150 then, the 1996 VSU was a bargain when compared to local USA winsearcher prices.

Had a taste of the 1998 at an offline recently. Just loved it, really wonderful (can’t compare, it’s the only vintage I’ve had).
