1995 Pichon Baron

1995 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Still pretty dark in color. Some bricking at the rim. Wonderful nose of cedar, leather, hint of mushroom, and a pretty floral component. On the palate though, tannins are pretty prominent but there is still some good fruit to make it enjoyable. More substantial than the 1997 and may be even better in the future. I’d rank it below the 1999 and just above the 1997 based on texture and potential.

My personal ranking at the moment:

1990 x 1
2004 x 13
2008 x 2 - probably points given for potential.
2003 x 1
2005 x 2
2000 x 3 - bought 3 more so I can revisit. Not enough acidity for my tastes.
1999 x 5
1995 x 1
1997 x 4
1993 x 1
1996 x 5
2006 x 1

Thanks for sharing. Here is a vintage where the Comtesse proves (far) more charming than the Baron… [cheers.gif]

Fred,

Thanks for the tasting note. I have the 2000, 2003 & 2005. So far I have tried the 2000 & 2003. I rank the 2000 much better than the 2003. I have not opened any of my 2005. Pichon Baron is one of my favorite Bordeaux. I am planning to buy the 2009 if I can find it at a decent price.

That’s what I keep hearing about the 2000. Maybe mine were in a bad place. The ones I opened were a little flabby and didn’t have enough acidity for my tastes. I doubled down and now have a 6 pack resting. Will probably wait 2-3 more years before I crack another. I put the 2003 ahead right now because the one I had some nice secondary notes going on.

Pichon Baron is my favorite also. Just bought a case of the 2000 on auction so I hope it turns out well, lol. I haven’t had any 2009 Bordeaux yet where any alleged low acidity bothered me so I inferred I wouldn’t have a problem with the 2000 PB (even at its most flabby Bordeaux doesn’t seem to approach the mid-point of Napa, for example). The 2008 is a spectacular wine and a steal at the price.
