1995 Calon Segur

I am trying to see if anyone has had a 95 recently? I am thinking of purchasing another bottle, but the last two bottles I had were very acidic and thin with almost no redeeming qualities. I can’t imagine the 95 is already over the hill so I am thinking it was just my bad luck, but wanted to do a cross-check.

You may have already done a search in this forum, but in any case, here’s some notes on the '95 CS (tasted head-to-head with the '96 CS) last year.

Looks like your experience is very similar to those of the tasters in the following thread.

Yeah, that makes me sad… I am between purchasing the another 95 Calon or a 2003 Pontet Canet. I love my Calon Segurs but now I am too scared.

those wines are like polar opposites
I’ve had similar experience with 95 CS

I’ve never had a Pauillac before, so maybe it’s time to see if I like them or not.

A bottle opened last year was very good.

That sounds like a fair description of the 1995 vintage in general!

Lucky you. I had a 96 CS before and the 95 was nowhere near as good.

I was at a vertical of Calon Segur a couple of years back and thought the 1996 was far superior to the 1995. 16 vintages of Calon Segur - WINE TALK - WineBerserkers

I think most bottles of 1995 classified growth bordeaux are really difficult right now, and they look in some ways to be like the 1975 Medoc vintage – needing another 10-20 years to either shed some tannin and come together or dry up into mostly fruitless puckery disappointments. Many 1975 Medocs needed 30-40 years to be enjoyable, but just as many didn’t hold their fruit that long. I think the verdict is just not yet in on 1995 Left Bank wines. I’m hopeful that some higher-end '95 Medoc wines might be glorious some day, but not optimistic that very many of them will.

I have had a 1995 Angelus twice in the last wtwo years and it truly blew me away. I would say the vintage can be a bit tough but some wineries still nailed it

Not entirely relevant, but I had this wine in 2005 and my experience was similar, thin and acidic.

1995 is a merlot year, 96 a cab year.

Calon Segur has had it’s ups and downs with some remarkable good efforts in vintages like 75, 82, 88, 96. 05 is not too bad. But the quality is more stable from 2009 onwards. Perhaps even 2011 onwards.

Oh no… I should have done a little research before going ahead with the purchase. I didn’t know Rolland had his hand in Pontet Canet… I hope I won’t regret this.

My experience mirrors many of those above.
I have cases of the '96 and love it.
I have a few bottles of '95, and they’re enjoyable. However, CS is typically a bit tannic and at times austere, and 1995 was a particularly austere and tannic vintage.
I don’t regret owning a few, but I’m happy I went short in '95 and long in '96. It was more luck than skill; 1996 was my wedding year, and Calon Segur is a wine we’d always liked, it’s long lived, and has a  heart on the bottle. For me, the '96 has turned out to be a perfect anniversary wine.

my rule for CS is to wait longer than you think is necessary

I’ve had the 95 twice in the last few months. The bottles I had were a bit thin with tannins I’d call slightly astringent and a hint of tart red fruit.

I’d echo Gary’s sentiments from above, I’m not sure if it has enough fruit to go the distance. For my money I’d rather own 96 than 95.

Agree with Faryan. I’ve had great experience over the years with old bottles of Calon Segur.

I’ve had the '95 5 times since release, with the last being 11/15. The wine is very typical of the Chateau and the vintage…both hard. It was very enjoyable the last time, as I drank it with a fatty ribeye. This wine showed great promise on release and I think it will reward the patient in another 4-9 years.

I had it this past weekend - I thought it was very good, but I decanted it for about 8 hours at about 60 degrees…
