1991 Girard Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Napa Valley - saved from the Bargain Basement

Moderately dark ruby color, only tiny bricking at the edge. The aromas are classic Cabernet, there’s a nice note of cassis, but it’s plummier than Bordeaux. There’s a good graphite hint with fresh minerality and the straightforward finesse of Napa at peak maturity. The palate is fully secondary but not at all tertiary, tannins resolved, still enough acidity to keep freshness. This is a beauty. Rated 94. Drink up. I picked up 3 bottles a year ago for $29 each, will drink before the end of next year.

One of my under the radar favorites along with Turnbull back when I drank cabs. Always love to read your notes.

Absolutely love the ‘91 vintage in California…my favorite of the decade.

Glad it showed well for you- Girard is a sentimental favorite of ours.

Agreed. Perhaps better than 1994.

Very nice to see. I was noticed that one of Dan’s comments in the NYT received many “likes”, btw.

I agree, my favorite vintage of the decade. I find '94 really good but maybe a little overrated. '97 was also nice, maybe also a little better than '94 for me.
Nice to find a fine Napa Cab ready to drink for under a buck a year… $0.90625 to be exact.
