1985 Bordeaux 40th anniversary dinner

Another wonderful '85 Bordeaux experience I had a few weeks ago was the Sociando Mallet. Perfectly mature and balanced. Just an excellent claret in a wonderful place. Loved it.

Maybe there are different bottlings of PL 85 -
all my 3 bottles were a bit herbal, the last about 10y ago …

The 85s might be the most red fruited and elegantly structured of the best vintages of the 80s — with only the 83s really in the running, but I’ve always found the 83s a bit denser and dark compared to the corresponding 85 — and I think that profile can show herbal as well. And PLL was known for a green streak in the era, which fans call mint and and leafy and detractors call bell pepper.

Nice notes!! Love 85 in general, and I agree that Rausan stands out - and is a bargain when you can find it.

I opened a 85 Cos for a friend’s 40th this year and it is in my running for WOTY - a clear step up from the ‘90 and ‘00 heavyweights battle we did a month ago.

The old timers when 1985 came out, compared them to 1953. Delicious young, but fully capable of lasting fifty years. They were right, and it’s hard to think as a vintage in this era of climate change that is close.

The one you opened some years ago at the late lamented Sutton Inn is what converted me to RS and made me a buyer

You steered me into some truly good stuff, too! Happy to enable THE Jay Miller in my humble way.
I have a bottle left of the 85 RS and will do my best to reserve for our next appropriate drinking occasion.

Sounds like we need an 85 Bordeaux night! Dale and I have already mentioned one, perhaps in the summer.
