This bottle was among several that I just found in a corner of my basement buried behind and under this and that, just where I first placed them 25 years ago. They were a gifted (maybe dumped?) to me from my late dad (who was no wine drinker) when he cleaned and sold his house in 1993. I did a little Googling and found that Boisset seems to be a modest producer and, knowing my dad, this bottle was probably among the producer’s most modest offerings. The condition of the wine is clear; the bottle has a little “head space”; it has been stored in a cool basement. This bottle will be opened and at least sampled before:
(1) Continuing to drink
(2) Dumping in the sink
Any advice on opening to have a shot at (1) if it is even there to be had ???
Coulour looks excellent and it is a good white vintage. Every chance that the wine will be very good.
Jean-Claude Boisset is a successful businessman in France, starting his businesses from scratch. He owns Domaine de la Vougeraie in Burgundy as well as many other larger wine businesses. Plenty of negociant wine has been sold over the years under the Jean-Claude Boisset name but in the early 2000’s a micro-négoce was set up under this name, recruiting winemaker Gregory Patriat from Domaine Leroy and developing a winery at headquarters in Nuits. The wines under this label are very good (we import them into Australia).
Epilogue: The wine is gone. Opened last week, poured in an open decanter and began the “evaluation”. The color shimmering clear, a deep rich golden yellow-orange, reminded me somewhat of one of my urine samples when I am in no mood to produce. Putting aside these thoughts, I poured a small taste for myself and my wife. No discernible aroma to me. First taste was very bland perhaps a little apple. “Vinegary” my wife exclaimed. Not ready to accept her harsh verdict I answered “I don’t think so”. We both finished our first glass and I poured seconds, but I could tell from the look on my wife’s face that her tasting experience was over. I brought out a backup bottle of another wine and poured her a fresh glass of it. I carried on. Managed the second and a third small glass. The only notable change was that the color of the wine seemed to be lightening?! Baffling to me especially since the wine was totally “clear” to start. I threw in the towel. I shared the rest of the wine with the kitchen sink.
