1982 Chateau Calon Segur, St-Estephe

I have only a few bottles of ’82 Bordeaux left, decided to pull this when Chris Bublitz visited.

Purchased on release. Top shoulder fill. Pop, decant, pour.

The color is very deep with some noticeable browning. The aromas are stunning, powerful with black fruit, currants and plums, along with an earthy component that does not seem anywhere near 40 years old. The palate is also a pleasure, the fruit is abundant, however there are substantial tannins, more burly than gritty. The texture offers both breadth and depth, it’s maybe a little blocky. This still retains some freshness, a powerful buddy of a wine, perhaps not with an abundance of finesse. Rated 94.5, fully mature but I would not be afraid to hold for a few more years. I don’t think the tannins will resolve, but this could still gain some polish. An excellent showing with assorted cheese after the lobsters.

Excellent wine. I’m down to my last couple of bottles from a case purchased on release. I’m glad that it continues to show well. Thanks for the note.

Awesome note. Great occasion. Chris is the man.

Big fan of older Calon, though I don’t think I’ve ever had an '82. Nice note!
