1974 Ridge York Creek Cabernet Sauvignon question

I won this bottle at auction, well, actually I won a 1974 Ridge York Creek Petite Syrah but it ended up being a typo on the acution house’s part and the Petite listed was actually the Cab I received.

The auction house has offered for me to return the Cab for a full refund or they will check the going price on the Cab and refund any difference if the current price on the Cab is lower than I paid (pretty good service by the auction house so far, although they were a little slow on returning emails and I had to call them).

I’ve searched and found no tasting notes, current price, or other info on this Cabernet, other than it was the first vintage of the York Creek Cab (as stated on the label).

From others tasting notes the Petite is a rocking bottle, hence why I bid on it.

My question…has anyone had this Cabernet? Know if it’s still good or not? And any ideas on value? Or any other advice?

Thanks in advance

No firsthand experience, but I’d be keeping it unless you paid a high premium for the PS. If bottle condition is pristine, I’d think somewhere in the $50-70 range would be a fair value, but that’s a wild guess from an armchair appraiser here.

Cheers,
fred

If you didn’t pay too much and the bottle looks in good shape, I would give it a try. 1974 was a great year for cab.

Andy,
Haven’t had the 74, but the 78 and 79 are both terrific wines drinking extremely well now.
I do think the majority of California Cabernet 74’s have started the downward slope while the 78’s are still holding on.
I’d probably keep the wine but plan on drinking it within a few years.

I should have added, with buyers premium I paid $78.

Probably fair. Rare bottle. Good chance it’s better than the PS.

That seems like a fair price.

I think I had this around '99 or '00. I will have to look back and see if I still have the notes.

I’ve had the '74 PS…$25 off WB a few years ago…good wine, but I’d be more intrigued to try the cab!

The '74 York Creek PS is an amazing wine that is still very much alive, but does not hold a candle to the '71 which is one of the 10 best wines I have ever had in my life.

For $78 I would keep the Cab though.

Thanks for all the advice, I’ll let you know how it turns out.

I’ve got the 1984, 1986 and 1992. Maybe a vertical tasting with big leaps between??

Sounds good…I’ll let you know.
