1955 Taylor Port

I plan to open one tomorrow. Any advice on decanting would be greatly appreciated. I have filters, but am unsure how much breathing time it would need.

I decanted a 1963 Dow a couple of hours before, and it wasn’t enough.

I recently had a 55 Graham and I opened it up and decanted around eight hours before and it was great.

FWIW - I have not had the 1955 Taylor but I have had the 1955 Dow three times in the past. I think five hours is right if you can give it that much time. Two hours is too short. If you have less than 4 hours, I would double decant.

IIRC, there was a TON of sediment in the wine, and the last time I opened a Taylor it was even worse than the Dow, so be careful when you decant. Use the Roy Hersh suggestion of cheesecloth as a filter. Also, if you the bottle has been moving around recently, stand it up immediately so it has a chance to settle a bit by tomorrow and decant slowly.

PS - despite a few bad notes on CT, I think the 1955 vintage is outstanding and I loved the Dow. Enjoy the Taylor.

Last time I had this was ten years ago, would go with a 6-8 hour decant, ports are pretty hardy and would not expect it to fade very quickly. I use a decanter with a stopper in it, if that helps

FWIW,
Hello, good afternoon.

My name is Janaina from Taylors port in Portugal.

I hope this email finds you well.

I’m assuming that is a Vintage port bottle from 1955. If is that the case, I recommend you put the bottle up today, so the sediments can stay in the bottom.

About 35 min to serve the wine, you should decant it just to separate de solids from the wine. Since is an old wine, you should drink straight away or you might lose some of the aromas and flavors.

To open, the cork will be very fragil, so you should use the corkscrew with tweezers to avoid break the cork.

You can drink the wine in the same night but not more than that.

The most important thing is to decant and separate the sediments from the wine.

If there is anything else that we can help, please let us know.

I hope you have an excellent time with this precious wine.

Best regards

Janaina Alberto

Had a 1955 Fonseca last May.
Stood up for about a week.
Opened and double-decanted late morning.
Was GREAT after dinner at about 8:00pm.

Enjoy!
