There has been a lot of heated discussion around the ultimate wine pairing for Popeyes spicy fried chicken-- Champagne, Riesling, Vouvray, White Burgs, etc…
I decided to put this to the test. On 10/28 we taste live. Four challengers have agreed to submit their pairings and allow the public to make their decisions.
Challengers:
Lyle Fass (Rockss and Fruit)
Jon Bonne (SF Chronicle Wine Editor)
Bill Addison (James Beard Nominated Food and Wine Writer)
Alan Kropf (Editor in Chief of Mutineer Magazine, and Sommelier)
Wines will be announced this coming week in time for everyone interested in participating to source the juice. Tasters will go through a structured tasting and comment, discuss, and ultimately vote on the best pairing.
Discussion and comments will be made via twitter, a hashtag will be created for the event, and I’ll set up some live video stream from Healdsburg, CA. (anyone in the area is welcome to taste here).
More details to come.
*this is not sponsored by Popeyes and has no commercial ties. Just trying to find an excuse to thrown down some tasty birrrds!
Sounds like fun, I am game. Although there is no Popeye’s within in 100 miles of my house, I will fry my own Spicy chicken. I checked out your Dirty South wine blog
Looking forward to the throwdown!
I will be in Hotlanta Oct. 28th. Maybe the boyz (Bowdon, Liotta, Corn-nutz) and I can do our own Popeye’s offline right there drinking out of a plastic cup. A revisit to the famous In-N-Out Las Vegas. Even thought Popeyes scares the bejesus out of me…I’m game.
None other than Pulitzer Prize winning food writer Jonathan Gold endorses Popeye’s (especially the dirty rice and red beans & rice). The biscuits are good too IF FRESH. You can’t take them home and reheat, never the same.
