007 in the Rhone ..... Roger Moore or Sean Connery?

I am sipping a much lauded 2007 Domaine Les Grand Bois “Cuvee Gabrielle” CDRV. What the hell is in my glass? It is tasty, but in the way that a slurpy from 7/11 is tasty. Very sweet in the mouth in its abundance of fruit - not quite confected, but close. In my youth I liked Roger Moore, but then I saw the light (within the universe of that analogy).

Is 2007 in the Southern Rhone all hype except for those who like the New World style of very ripe and palate saturating? I have not had enough to say, but please comment…

Fortunately, I haven’t had much experience. My favorite everyday+ wine for ten years has been the Monteuil Levade VV Cotes du Rhone from Mont Olivet. Hearing the hype from some folks whose palates I thought were in line with mine (I don’t mean critics) I bought a half case without even tasting. Opened the first with great anticipation and was greeted by a tannic, unbalanced glob of confiture that didn’t improve over three days.

Have not bought or tasted another 2007 southern Rhone since. Too many vintages I like available in quantity and at attractive prices for me to waste my money on more experimentation.

Well, I am not averse to more experimentation, but I’d like to hear from RHoneheads who have sampled more widely from 2007.

I’m much more a fan of 01, 04 and 05 in the S Rhone than of 06 or 07. Most of the 06’s I’ve had have been over the top. All of the 07’s I have had have been. I haven’t tasted super broadly, but I’m not inclined to based on what I have tasted.

Josh, what have you tasted from 007?

This has not become any more interesting by the second night. It is still OK, but just that. A fruit bomb that could be an Aussie Grenache. Does not speak of the Rhone to me at all.
