001 Vintners Innaugural Release - Graeme MacDonald Winemaker

Jasud will be legendary and for those of us that have tasted we’re just building our vertical from the start. Dry farmed, no trellis, low alcohol, just old school.

I’d rather the price be lower but will support Ketan given everything he had to do to get the vineyard going. It’s just so tough to buy from all of the wineries.

Having tasted the wine. 195 is a relative steal, imo.

There’s no such thing as $195 steal for wine, but I’m glad there’s a dude who started from scratch and is making awesome wine.

Relative to people who buy high end wine, imo. For the average wine drinker, probably not.

Fair

What is your definition of ‘steal’ and relative to what? Other Napa cabs? Bordeux?

Other high end wines ive tried. Napa, sonoma, 2nd growth bdx, oregon, champagne, white burg.

Interesting, I can find 2018/2019 PLL, LLC, Montrose around that price (if not cheaper) from just a simple WS search, are you saying the wine is much 'higher quality than that? Understand people have different palates but I’m having a hard time beliving this to be the case

What wines have you tried? Ever try jasud? Ive tried older vintages of PLL (1989) and montrose (1986). In my opinion and for my palette, jasud has been the best wine under 200 ive ever tried. At least off the top of my head. 08 DP for under 200 also. What a great wine. Ive never tried the 18s and 19s that you mentioned. I have 3 19 montrose sleeping. And maybe in 20 to 30 years those wines will be better. But my opinion isnt changing :).

Not a knock on Jasud (haven’t had the fortune to try it yet) but when someone calls a ~$200 a ‘relative steal’ it warrants a bit of surprise given the wines I’ve mentioned (e.g., 2nd growth bdx) have ample amount of reviews/history.

I’ll stop commenting on this as this thread is 001 and not Jasud but perhaps I’ll snag a bottle or two when/if someone on WB thins their cellar.

Gotta be honest here, $195 is a tough price in the wine market when 2nd growths can be had sub $100. Gran Riservas from Rioja should be sub $100, some have crept past that price. Great Brunello can be had sub $100. Aussie Shiraz, also sub $100. Can’t speak to burgundy, I buy none. Riesling is a steal, can’t believe how cheap these wines are for value.

The world wine market says $195 is expensive. Relative to Napa and the land of $200+ cab, $195 is priced fairly when comparable wines are $300 or $400+. I still would like the wine to be cheaper but I’m a buyer having tasted 4 vintages of Jasud.

I agree, but to a certain extent. I can find grand cru chablis for under 100, but not grand cru mersault or montrachet. I can find grower champagne for under 100 that i think competes or beat certain grand marques. This game can be played for all sorts of different wines. Most of the 2nd growth BDX under 100 ive tried wouldnt come anywhere close to jasud, let alone other wines under 200. There will always be outliers. Jasud could sell for 250 to 300 at release and would more than likely sell out. Everyone would like wine to be cheaper. Heck why cant jasud be 95 like beta? At the end of the day, i think jasud is a relative bargain at under 200. Time will tell (secondary market, auctions, mailing list etc.) I think it will be favorable to ketan and jasud (beta already has).

Where are all these posts about $195 a bottle coming from? Isn’t this $225 a bottle?

It got a bit side tracked tbh

I’d argue $195 is expensive for about 99.638% of wine drinkers.

I would agree. In a previous post above i said “high end wine drinkers.”

The difference is 2nd growth BDX is a commodity - most every bottle is replaceable by something else similar. Jasud is a very singular wine. So getting something singular that is irreplaceable for the same price as a commodity is kind of a relative steal.

Thread drift—- I’ll bite. What makes Beta and Jasud so unique?

I only mentioned Jasud.
