I’m thinking no increase
I don’t disagree with this, but that rule could apply to lots of other goods as well. Like cars, clothing, which even if they never get used, immediately depreciate. If a retailer can sell out at an over-market price, why wouldn’t it take advantage of that?
For that matter, don’t nearly all wines resell for less than their retail price?
It’s a fair point, but I’m not sure it proves that much.
The other point is that I would think wineries are expecting that most of their wine list members aren’t active in the auction markets. I have no idea if that’s true.
Of course. But this was in response to me asking why anyone would buy from a list when they can get the wine in the market for less and the response was because they want the wine to continue to exist.
Aha! I lost the thread, clearly.
It’s an interesting dynamic you raise, which is why I jumped into it. The economics and structure of the wine industry have always fascinated me because it’s so inefficient and weird. Your point was just another example of all that.
Jack and the Team produce amazing wine from a historic vineyard. Grateful to get an offering. I’m in…
Not sure if “grateful” is a term I’d use when I’m giving hundreds of dollars for grape juice… but to each their own
The release is now live. The price is still $225 per bottle or $675 per 3-pack (not including shipping and taxes).
offered 4 3 pks and 1 Mag. took a single 3 pk
Same offer- took a 3-pack, as I’ve done each vintage. Of interest, a 2023 Ecotone Merlot to be released in spring- only four barrels produced.
I tried the 2023 Ecotone Merlot in May with Jack, and it was really really good. My GF said it was one of her favorite wines of the entire trip. It seems like with the release of the Merlot, they will be going Merlot in the Spring and Cab Sauv in the Fall.
Ah but would you/do you feel grateful for a Macdonald grape juice allocation?
Any idea what the Merlot will cost?
Sadly, I am not sure. Jack didn’t state at the lunch, and the email also doesn’t say. I imagine it will be close to the Cab Sauv pricing if not identical (but don’t quote me on that).
Not sure I saw a thread for this yet.
"The release of the 001 Vintners 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Ecotone Vineyard is now live. As a past patron of 001, you have two hours of preferred access to this smaller release. Due to our limited production, we encourage you to submit your order early.
This offering is available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like more wine than you were allocated, please use the wish request feature. When the release closes, we will grant wishes to the best of our ability. Your order will be shipped on October 27th, weather permitting."
Just curious how others are looking at this. With Mowe, Bella Oaks, and MacDonald all being released recently, how do they compare with 001? I realize that MacDonald is the gold standard now, but its getting harder and harder to justify buying all of them.
So anyone try them all?
Thanks.
I’ve bought them all and tried them all (MacDonald only the ‘22).
The Bella Oaks has been the most complex, but it’s also the only one with the benefit of time (2017). The others are roughly 2/3 the price so there’s a value component as well.
IMO there’s enough differences that I can justify having all of them. If anything, I’d cut the Le Genie and keep the BO proprietary along with the Mowe and MacDonald.
Thoughts on why this is available still? My gut instinct would have been the price isn’t out of proportion for Ecotone offerings and the winemaker alone should sorta sell. Guess there’s something not so amazing about the wine or Ecotone or the price on all Ecotones is thought to be too high? I saw some good remarks on value for cabernet and I suppose people are nervous also since someone mentioned the secondary pricing is below market value?
Lots of discussion on price and availability in the original thread.
I’m out. Passed the price point with which I’m comfortable. While the winemaker is super exciting, I just can’t do it. I’m having a tough time with Fait Main sitting in my Inbox knowing that their price point (although also with mandatory 3-packs) is a good bit lower (and Palisade Canyon, Tidings, etc.). Darn.
I got the '19 and '21 but passing on this one because of the combination of subpar vintage, price point, and CT reviews of the better previous vintages. Only sprang for the Fait Main LPV in the most recent onslaught of offers (although of course I would have pulled the trigger on MacDonald in a second, vintage and all, if offered).
