Going to Las Vegas in two weeks and would appreciate restaurant suggestions.
We’re staying at the Ventian and will have several evenings free. We enjoy asking the wine manager for suggestions based on what we are ordering, and are always open to their advice, as we are eager to try new wines and just learning old world wines.
Also suggestions for more casual burger/sandwich places would be greatly appreciated.
Normally, I would not bother to help anyone asking for advice, but to a fellow NE Ohioian, I’ll make an exception.
If you like Thai food and want to eat at a place with one of the top wine lists in the country, the Lotus of Siam is worth at least 2 visits. Go for dinner, not lunch. As for menu suggestions there, if there is not already my suggestions in the current OL thread, I’ll add them here (make sure you ask for “Bob’s dish”. It is not on the menu, but it is awesome).
I am not a fan of pretty much any place located inside a casino. The best places are outside of the casinos. I ate at a Brasilian steakhouse near the airport called texas de Brasil that was very good. It is a chain but there is another place in town that is supposedly also very good that is not a chain.
I don’t know where in NEO you live, but unless you are in Cleveland and eat at that Mexican place near W 117, you’ll want to get authentic Mexican food at Lindo Mohican.
I cannot possibly emphasize the greatness of Lotus of Siam enough. One of my favorite restaurants, period.
Burger Bar at the Mandalay Bay does a solid job with a wide variety of burgers. Great beer list, too. Hubert Keller’s casual spot and pretty reasonably priced. Think of it … you can get a burger for $9 and a vodka with Red Bull for $11.50! Gotta keep the engines moving in Vegas …
Funny. I think LOS is an easy oversight, for me. IMHO, It’s played out. Yawn. Moving on…
Went to L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon a few weeks ago. Had a great meal.
But my vote for best restaurant in Vegas? It’s not in a casino. Ichiza. I’ve been told it’s where all of the restaurant people go for meals and the food is awesome!!
For my wife and I, we go to Lotus Of Siam, and while there, take in vegas.
And for those who just call it great Thai food, I think it throws off people who are not familiar or that interested in Thai food. LOS is just outstanding for it’s great food, ability to work with anyone no matter what their tastes might be. No, it is not, nor is it meant to be Per Se, French Laundry, a great steakhouse, etc. But what it is to me is outstanding food that I can’t get anywhere, and at a price that is 1/5th the cost of a meal at one of those over blown fancy restaurants that flood the strip and the casinos.
If just going to a restaurant with a “big” name, and a fancy location is what you want, at any price, then I understand skipping LOS. Otherwise, you have to go. And to go to Vegas and not even try it, is nuts. If we are there for a week, we easily eat there 3 times, maybe even more.
Thank you all so much for the great suggestions. We try to avoid the “touristy” places if we learn of local favorites. Lotus of Siam seems to be a crowd pleaser, and we will add the burger spots to our list as well.
Bob, we live in Cleveland’s eastern suburbs, but have not tried the Mexican place you mentioned. We’ll have to seek it out!
I can’t think of the name of it, but I have it at home if you need it. Their mole is outstanding. Really special stuff, and probably the best mole I have had. It is worth the trip.
Audrey:
that is the place. However, upon looking at their website, I see that they have expanded. I don’t know what the quality is like now. But I can say that 11 years ago, their mole poblano was pretty special.
I think LOS is easy to pass for the FOOD alone. I can find better Thai food in Seattle, and I know Thai locals who can cook for me… so it’s not the food. It’s good, but nothing earth shattering.
For me, LOS is about the wine list, such reasonable prices, and a crazy deep list, especially German Rieslings… dear lord i’ve never seen that many Rieslings on any wine list.
