I played it safe aiming for the 20 but I admire your confidence in racing everyone to the 23.

Same here, was one of the lucky few to snag the 23. But kinda bummed I only ended up with a rip10 as my second bottle from my other account. I tried searching for a store with a 20 for too long :/

Next time ask for some help... I enjoyed the rush to buy and would've happily helped you snag a second bottle [cheers.gif]

Hellz yeah! I was able to secure a PVW 23 and you and Scott’s tips were really helpful. The pages still took forever to load but got the confirmation email. I think TW should separate NoCal from SoCal as I think there are tons of GR members in CA. The whole process could have been smoother but at least the site didn’t crash again.

I too must extend my thanks for the very helpful tips provided by WBers who bought in the previous days. Made navigating and anticipating what to do next extremely easy.

Looks like it was CA and AZ GR members that were all elbowing each other to try and get orders in. After I got my confirmation, I went back in a few minutes later to see if selection varied from store to store. Every store I pulled up, whether in AZ/NorCal/SoCal, were all sold out of the same items and had only ORVW 10 and TH Handy Sazerac left as choices.

Interesting, my offer was SC, GA, and MD...weird combination. The SC and GA offerings seemed to sell out at the exact same time, so may have come from the same set of inventory. The MD offer lingered for a while, with only Winkle 10, 12, and Handy available in each MD store for that duration.

I was in AZ. Had a bottle of 20 year in my cart since I still have some 23 left from 2016 and the site froze on me and I couldn't place my order. My backup was William Larue Weller but didn't get that either. Settled for the Thomas Handy Sazerac. I prefer the offline method where I can just drive there same day and get my choice of PVW.

Interesting. I guess everyone will prefer the method with which they are successful but I much prefer an online method... no way I would have been able to take the time to go down to the store and buy in person. I wonder what the overall reception was (especially given the false start) and whether they will do the same again next year.

I think one bottle total of either PVW or BTAC is fair and spreads the wealth. Also like TW rewarding their customers that have spent the most at their stores. There will never be a fair way of distributing allocated items and someone will always feel screwed, but the online first come first serve is as good as any method. Definitely better than lining up overnight for a chance of purchasing a bottle. Lining up is lame.

Drink yours in good health, as well!

I'm guessing since the CA/AZ online scrum was a day or so later than what Eastern Time Zone GR members had to endure, I'll hopefully get notification in the next day or two.

I guess technically that's right but there are ways around it much cheaper if you're just after the Pappy (although there's no guarantee that you'll get it).

For one, "Winery Direct"/"Spirits Direct" products are credited at x1.5 other products, so that brings it down to $1,666.

Also, Bordeaux Futures only require a 50% deposit and are all "Winery Direct" but get credited as purchases immediately for the full amount, so that's $833.

Plus your status is good for the year you earned it and the following year, so 2017 en primeur gets you access to 2018 and 2019 releases of Pappy.

So, in conclusion, for a mere $417 per year (ave.) you too can have the possibility of maybe buying an expensive bottle of bourbon at retail... plus you have the option to pay the amount owing on that Bordeaux to get those bottles too, I guess. And you get invited to some tastings throughout the year. I think that's all the benefits.

I was on a plane with spotty WiFi so only ended up with a Handy. I scored a lot B in 2016 though which was nice because I opened it the night I got engaged so I’ll always have a spot in my heart for Pappy, no matter how overrated

They just did this first come first serve thing in Washington- most sold out in 2-3 minutes- or wasn't available based on my store preference. Having had access to a bunch of PVW 15, 20 a few years back (and still having a 20), decided to go for (and got) a bottle of the Eagle 17
As one of our most valued customers, you have the chance at 9:00 AM PDT Monday, October 22, 2018 to make an online purchase of one of the world’s most sought-after spirits–ONE bottle of Pappy Van Winkle OR another prized whiskey from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Learn how, below.
Prices were:
Old RVW 10- $109.97
VW Special Reserve 12- $119.97
Eagle 17- $134.97
George T Stagg- $134.97
Sazerac 18 Rye- $134.97
Thomas Handy Rye- $134.97
William Larue Bourbon- $134.97
PVW 15- $159.97
PVW 20- $249.97
PVW 23- $429.97

Gotta say, this is the only thing that makes me miss the old state run liquor system. In the last year of it, I was able to track down a mixed 6 pack of PVW 15 and 20 for way way less.

It's interesting because it is a big jump but it looks very similar to the original offer from last year (see the first post in this thread) before they had all the computer issues and revised the pricing down.

Georgia pricing was a little more than last year:

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year - $89.97
Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year - $99.97
Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 15 Year - $129.97
Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 20 Year - $199.97
Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 23 Year - $359.97
Thomas H. Handy Sazerac - $114.97
Sazerac Rye 18 Year - $114.97
George T. Stagg - $114.97
Eagle Rare 17 Year - $114.97
William Larue Weller - $114.97

I started trying to access the site at 9:00, after a couple of trys it loaded and by that point the Pappys, ER, and Weller were gone, I got a Stagg in the cart but it timed out on the final step. I did get an Old Rip Van Winkle 10, so I wasn’t shut out completely. I’ll probably end up sharing it with Bourbon drinking friends or look to trade it for a good Scotch.

Hmm. Good question. I was hit with $30 in taxes on top of this- which would be more than 20% by my math (local sales tax is 10%) so looks like any state taxes were in addition to.

Little off subject here but do you all think that the price of Pappy will continue to rise or is it your belief that it has leveled off?
Look at the after-market ... retail prices still have a lot of upside before they level off
Thanks Mark, do you think the secondary market has leveled off as well or has that continued to appreciate year over year?
In my opinion (which isn't worth much) I think we'll see the price level off in the secondary. The bourbon hysteria can't expand much more and every manufacturer is currently storing a few select barrels for 12, 15, 23, 25, who knows how many years. I think we will soon see a glut of these long dated products with Pappy being just one of many (albeit a high quality one). The original Stitzel-Weller bottles meanwhile will continue into the stratosphere.

I also don't think the retail prices will grow too much and the reason for that is that, while I'm sure Buffalo Trace make a profit on Pappy, its real purpose is to drive sales of its other products. If Pappy gets more and more expensive to the point where it no longer creates a buying frenzy on release, it loses its appeal as an incentive for wholesalers and retailers.

Maybe both those takes are incredibly naïve, but I just don't see either continuing the rapid rise we've seen.

Crashing for me too. Not surprised, I bet CA added a bunch of GR members. I got as far as entering my offer code and then hung up there. No checkout page. Now back at picking a store with no stores popping up. I bet they reschedule again.

So predictable. I don’t understand why e-commerce sites can’t get their act together. It happened last year, you added way more GR members, you have to account for the increased number of ppl that will log on all at once. They should just go back to just releasing it to stores and send out the surprise email.

Email just arrived stating same apology and date of next attempt TBD as the updated HTML email from a couple days ago.

As I'd mentioned previously in this thread, my suspicion is that this debacle is again more of a poorly written app situation, rather than lack of bandwidth and compute resources. TW doesn't typically have many of these high volume surge type of events, and their IT organization likely reflects that. If they outsourced the writing of the code, then whichever outfit they worked with didn't adequately test the app in conditions simulating the traffic load that happened this morning.

Do you think people who hit GR between now and the do-over will be in the pappys purchase? If so we may have even more traffic :P

same thing happened with Lost Abbey - each year their web server would crash cause it wasn't ready for the high volume surge.
