Of the purchases, only 10 were my doing!
it’s cellar inventory—so no weaseling out when Jonathan pulls the trigger. I often hand my wife the credit card when we make a purchase so I can remind her she bought it. Stay well. Zero bought for me but very few consumed since I’m on call part of this month and now.
Oh I know his purchases count, just thought I might get out of some teasing! :)

It's okay, as long as the bottles he drinks when I'm not there count as well.

Stay well, Doc.

People - there are two more evenings this month in which to consume wine. Why report early? Have you no faith in your ability to drink wine (or buy it)?

Well. We are hitting three bottles a night right now as we recover from COVID-19.
Mild symptoms for both of us.
I’d like to say we are reducing inventory but I keep buying. One of these days I’ll figure out exactly how many bottles I have. It’s probably around 1200 which is a very modest number

Feb:
Bought: 23
Drank: 21
Change: +2 (so close to moving in the right direction!)

Mar:
Bought: 39
Drank: 6
Change: +33 (so far off the mark - but coming down with COVID symptoms stopped my drinking full stop for two weeks)
Total: 500 (this is a solid psychological barrier for me, so should be easier to stop buying and start 1 in, 1 out)

I'll try to keep track now that I've done my first full inventory in 3 years (many thanks, self-isolation order!). That inventory sits me at 400 bottles (still a close estimate---I haven't verified exactly how many bottles my friends in Cleveland are storing for me, but it's about 2 cases).

This month--9 purchased, 11 consumed.

Impending plus---with less work, anticipating fewer purchases
Impending minus---I hate opening bottles alone, so fewer bottles will be opened.

Consumed 23 and purchased 26 in March.

Best progress in a while and consumption has been trending up with most of these going down the last 10 days.

Consumed 10
Purchased 0 (well actually 5 Dehlinger Rose but those go right in the fridge when they arrive and not into inventory so they dont count)

I only consumed one more bottle this month than I purchased - not a great quarter. Two major impacts - (1) consuption down a bit because I lost a couple of events with friends due stay at home rules and (2) I made the "mistake" of asking the Caveau de Chassagne Montrachet for their then current stock list. At least I have more Chassagne Montrachet premier cru reds.

It's a few hours early, but I'm so excited to report in this month that I'm jumping the gun, assuming we open two bottles for our Zoom chat tonight.

April

Purchased: 13
Consumed: 74
Net: -61

Note that the "Consumed" total includes 3 corked bottles, 2 cooking wines, 5 opened and never finished, and 2 full cases given away to friends and family for virtual tastings, care packages and on Homemade Pizza Take-out Night #1.

Guess lock down finally got to us after all.

I'll join Sarah in posting a little early as I could not be in better company. Unfortunately I was much less successful.

Starting 591

6 opened
16 purchased

601 remaining

I'm fortunate that
a) this week's winebid auction ends in May, not April
b) Magnums count as one bottle
c) I'm counting opened rather than fully consumed so the bottle of Bodegas Hidalgo VOS Wellington Palo Cortado I started yesterday counts even though I only had one glass.

Edited because I forgot about the Paetra order I placed last week. Drat. I'm now above my self imposed 600 bottle limit.

April was good for us with 25 consumed and only three purchased for a net of -22. My pending deliveries are down to 15 which is the lowest it has been in 20 years and I am clearly in sight of reaching my cellar size goal of 1800-2000 bottles in 2020.

I haven’t purchased any wine in 12 days. The shakes wore off after the first week, and this really, finally (maybe) feels like the new normal.

I’ll report back in a month.

Consumed - 26
Bought - 42 (44 if Envoyer gets around to sending me an invoice for the last two) - I'll be honest, boredom set in, and Envoyer had neat stuff, and then I went in for two cases between Bedrock and Walter Scott.

Cellar has crept up to 519. Heck.

I'm not sure whether I should institute a no-buying plan for May, an only-curiosities plan, or an only-specials plan.

I'll play.

For 2020 so far:

Purchased: 54
Consumed: 89

Consumption is up while sheltering in place but buying has been too. I bought 28 while consuming 23.

My goal for the year is to consume twice as much as I buy and continue that for the next few years.

My inventory is exploding. I basically decided that since I could afford to buy a lot of wine, I would. Wineries need the support right now, so I am doing my part. Once things get back to semi-normal the spigot is going to get shut off...probably by my wife.

Massive massive fail this month:

1st Jan to 6th April: 12 bottles bought
7th April to 30th April: 52 bottles bought
YTD consumption: 50 bottles.

I posted about my covid-19 buying problem here:

Basically yes. Since the beginning of the year. I did drink the night of the Rhys zoom event and superbowl weekend but not much otherwise. Plan to drink this evening though.

Just looked and I drank twice in March. Shared a 2008 Louis Michel MdT with a friend that i carried into Le Diplomate and drank with trout almondine and a 2002 Grivot Boudots I drank her with a friend here with grilled quail just before the shutdown. Both delicious!

Bought 16 January 10. None since then except 2 Ridge MB and that largely because we visit Ridge several times a year. Consumption at 59 since January 1 has been the two of us at home but also lots of family give-a-ways (yeah sure). When 2019 ended I said enough purchades for now. I may resume buying or be ultra selective. Although my cellar is largely European, I’ll stay with the Ridge and Ceritas Porter Bass chard. I’ll probably run out of rose at some point and need to add Cotat and some beaujolais. Oh this is hopeless.

Wrong way: Bought: 45 bottles - More bottles purchased in April 2020 than I have in quote some time
Only Consumed 15
Was totally not planned. More time at home, enabled by Berserkers posting about wines, reading about wine, and some Berserker Quarantine buys contributed. I really didn't want to buy much wine in 2020, but I've already done damage. I am going to try for no purchases May/June. Not one bottle. LOL.

I have not been posting my "progress" monthly, but the direction and net effects of the last several months activity are very similar to Dennis'. I need to revise my original goal from last September to something more focused. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=150102&hilit=cellar ... 0#p2817992
I am taking Dennis’ approach and will try to go cold turkey on wine buying for a while. I intend to buy no wine starting today through the end of June. The only measure of success will be wines purchased because for me that is the issue.

Some recent germane conversations in the last week. . .

As we are packing for our trip back from FL to MA
Jim: “I hope I can fit all the wine that I bought in the back of the car”
Jacqueline: “Maybe you can put some bottles in the bottom of Bodhi’s dog bed. Put a pillow on top and Bodhi can lie on the pillow”
Jim: “Great idea”

On our last day on the road before arriving back in MA
Jim: “Just so you know. I am expecting several wine deliveries from FedEx this week. These are bottles that I delayed shipment for until we got back to MA because I did not want to add to what I had to bring back. Maybe I have been buying too much wine recently?”
Jacqueline: “It is something you enjoy and we can afford to do, so why not!”

This morning on our dog walk with Bodhi.
Jim “I have to go pick up some wine today at the local wine store that they are holding for me”
Jacqueline: “What?!”
Jim: “There were some wines that I asked them to set aside for me until we got back from FL”
Jacqueline: “How many bottles of wine do we have now?”
Jim: “About X” (I lie as it is probably closer to 2X)
Jacqueline: “Maybe you should stop buying wine for a while”
Jim: “You are probably right”
Age merely shows what children we remain.

Another successful month, which would have been even better if our friends at Balanced Wine Selections hadn't had a big sale! There's always an excuse, isn't there?

The below assumes we will drink the two bottles we have pulled for tonight:

Purchased: 35
Consumed: 68
Net: - 33

Disclosures: 6 of the purchased bottles were magnums. Of those "consumed," 5 were corked/spoiled, and 12 were given away in COVID care packages.
Sort of ITB - my husband imports a small amount of sake and I help out

Whew, back down below 600. I would like to thank all participants in this thread as without it I would be way over. I can't tell you how many times I had a full cart with my cursor hovering over the submit button

Starting 601

8 opened
4 purchased

597 remaining

Unfortunately I was disappointed by most of the Paetra. I liked the Pinot Gris but the Riesling and Rose were not my thing. Still, glad to have had the chance to try them at such a good price.

I might be up next month as I usually allow myself some leeway for a birthday purchase.

I hit the pause button for a bit and inventory did drop. Then I am not exactly sure what happened, FedEx and UPS became frequent visitors again, and now its back up near the miid-900s with 42 pending.

Time to get to work... er, consuming.
