Which vintages of Burgundy are you drinking in 2016?

I know, I know there are already threads on Burgundy style and a search for a vintage chart, but my question is somewhat different:

Which vintages of Burgundy are you planning to open or would open (if you had them) this year? It’s fine to distinguish between red and white, although I am mostly interested in views on red. Also fine to distinguish at the village or other level.

I like the 2002 wines right now…but also know they will still reward patience. So I’d aim for 2006, 2007, & 2008 village levels right now. I’m opening an '89 1er Cru for my 40th birthday this June. Otherwise I’m just trying to drink my Oregon & German Pinots while I continue waiting for my Burgs to mature.

It’s all about the red in my house. [cheers.gif]

Grand Cru level: 1995 is the prime suspect right now. Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin is near peak (you knew I was going to say that, right Fu? neener ), Ponsot Clos de la Roche is just coming around, and Bertrand Ambroise Corton le Rognet is fantastic. We’re out of 1983 now after finishing our last bottles of Drouhin Echezeaux and Charmes Chambertin which were sooooo good. No plans on backfilling because condition is too risky. We’ve also had a few fabulous bottles from 1993 and 1990. 1996 - 1999 seem to be coming along fine but most could use a few more years. The exception in that window is 1997 which we’ve had a few that were great (Potel Clos de la Roche being most notable). Anything from this century still has too much tannin for my wife, and I prefer more resolved bottles too.

Premier Cru level: Really enjoyed a 1999 Potel and a 2000 Comte de Vogue within recent months. A few 2003’s have been really nice with lots of fruit, including a Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin (EDIT: oops, this is a Grand Cru blush ) and a Gouges Nuits St. George. Depending on the Domaine, you could go as young or old as you want because many producers make their 1ere Crus very approachable young (see Faiveley) and still have the ability to age well over a decade or two.

Village Level: Had a sweet 2005 Alain Burguet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes and a richly fruited 2005 Ponsot du Pinson that were surprisingly open despite the vintage being supposedly shut down for many wines of all levels.

'66, '74. Oh that was the Barolo thread

Village: 2005, 2002, 2007
1er: 1990,1991, 1993, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007
GC: (small sample size alert) 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993

I was thinking it as your sentence was being read. LOL

2000, 1997, 1992, 1991, (1990), 1989 and older …
some 1995s, 1998, 2001s …
(I´m talking about red)

If you mean reds, anything 2000 or older, except saving higher end 1999’s for a few more years. Maybe even middle 1999’s. Maybe not drinking 1999’s at all.

2007 anything, happy fun wines.

2009 for intense curiosity as to whether they are the best of both worlds: rich early drinking fruit with real complexity buried deep beneath.

2001 once in a while but I have almost none. Meadows loves that vintage for certain wines but other critics do not.

Except as a cerebral data point, which I usually regret anyway, nothing right now from 2002 2003 2005 2010 2012. No interest in 2004 or 2011. Very little interest in 2008. Very happy to drink someone else’s 2006 but too indistinct wines to buy any for my palate.

from what i’ve tried, reds (at all level) from 88, 91, 93, 00, 02 have all been great lately. some 01s have also been enjoyable. at this stage though i really like 93 and 00 (with 02 not far behind).

I am primarily drinking 2001, 2002, 2006 and 2007. I am trying very hard not to drink 1999s. A lot of them are really good right now, but I think they will get better. I am drinking some 1996 and love the vintage, but again think they will get better. Where I have wines before 1996 I am drinking them, but mostly I have drunk through these vintages. I have very little 2003s and 2004s. The 2003s I have are from Truchot and need time. The 2004s I have I mostly have little confidence in and open them mostly with fear. My 2005s and most things younger than 2007 I have found too young, although about a week ago I tried a 2008 that was really good.

If anything, I’m consistent. Every time we go to The Prime Rib in Philly, I order the tomato soup, the prime rib (what else would you expect?), and the chocolate cake for dessert. Every time we go to The Chop House in Voorhees, I order the onion soup, the filet oscar, and the chocolate cake for dessert. I might as well have my orders tattooed on each arm - roll up the right sleeve for the waiter at The Prime Rib; roll up the left sleeve for the waitress at The Chop House. [cheers.gif] If the menu ever changes at either place, I might have a panic attack.

ps - I shop at the same two men’s stores too. One for the last 8 years, the other for the last 20… and God forbid Allen Edmonds goes out of business! I’d probably go barefoot.

91, 93, 96, a few 99s, 00, 01, a few 02s.
I may check in on some more recent vintages as well

2011, 2012, and 2013 to assess the style and character of vintage.
2005 Village.
Polish off some 2004s.
Smattering of other wines from 2000’s.

91, 93, 95, 98, 00, 01, 07. And the odd bottle of 64, 72, 78, 85.

Just this week I have drunk 15, 14, 13, 12, 09, 08, 07, 06, 05, 03, 02, 00, 84, 78 and 47. Admittedly I am in Burgundy but I am happy to drink it young, old and in between.

oddly i have had some 1er cru 07s recently that needed quite a bit more time

I did 2 minutes of work to consolidate all the information from everyone.

As of right now, the only years NOT to drink are 2010, 1999 and 1994.

Reg. 1994: I would drink up my 1994 Bg if I´d any left (never had many, nor ever refilled) … as good as ALL are fully mature, only a few were outstanding … and I saw no reason to wait …

Ok, some might keep for another 5 years …

Ditto, but not many 99s and plenty of 08-13…
