TN: 2014 Roagna Langhe Rosso (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC)

Rarely do I open Nebbiolo too late but very often too soon. This is by no means in an optimal drinking window yet but it’s not too mean and the quality is very evident. Would love to by more at the original price but it is what it is. A lovely style of Nebbiolo, elegance all the way.

The nose has a good deal of restrained red cherry fruit, spice, dry wood, tar and minerally tones. It is appropriate and articulate but clearly holding a lot back. On the palate it has great proportions, terrific savory fruit and a very firm frame. Dead serious, it is lacking nothing but for now everything is tight wound and the structure has the last word. It’s very easy to admire and there isn’t a massive tannic wall that would render it unapproachable or difficult to drink but I would say there is another ten years ago for it to reach its apogee. The 2011 was way more enjoyable at this stage but likely this has a higher ceiling. It’s not a 30€ wine anymore but for that price is overperforms.
