2012 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (7/23/2014)
#12-13, 9% abv. Very pale colour. Slightly spicy nose, with some green apple aromas as well and if you try very hard, a bit of a herbaceous note. The palate is very restrained, and this is one of the most restrained '12s I’ve tasted so far. Not to worry – this is still loaded with fruit and acid. I think it’s the intense minerality that tames the beast. Strangely enough there’s a bit of a chalky texture to this wine. A light hand was used to make this wine; it’s clear as crystal (pun intended). Lovely. (90 pts.)
